How many Marines are in the US Marines?

About 200,000 US Marines. They have the French Foreign Legion outnumbered 25 to one.
Prior to the global war on terror the US Marines had an active duty strength of approximately 183,000. This includes Officers and Enlisted. This end strength is set by Congress (as it is for all services). The Marine Corps also has a sizable reserve made up by both active duty Marines that have served at least one full term of enlistment on active duty, as well as reservists that served only on active duty for training. Frequently the US Marine Corps would "get around" the limitation on end strength by bringing reservists on active duty for periods of up to one year to augment the active duty corps, and these reservist did not count against the active duty end strength.

Since the GWOT, congress approved a significant increase in the active duty end strength to something like 225,000. This does not include the Marine Reserve units that were activated for the 2nd Gulf War to bulk up the US Forces in Theater.

The US Marines are a smaller service because they are considered elite and hold themselves to a higher standard than virtually all military services around the globe. They are in fact the largest all elite force on earth.

What percent of us Americans join the marine corps?

There are about 200,000 people currently in the Marines and there are about 320,000,000 people in the U.S. and so about .0625% or about 1 in every 1600 people.

What does this mean No better friend no worst enemy?

Answer

That quote is the lifeline for the US Marines. With a Marine as your friend, you have a person who will kill to protect you. With a Marine as your enemy, you have a person who will kill you.

The history behind that quote.

The earliest origin of this statement is attributed to the the epitaph of Lucius Cornelius Sulla, famous general and legendary dictator of ancient Rome. His original words...

"No friend ever served me, and no enemy ever wronged me, whom I have not repaid in full."

  • His self-made epitaph, as quoted in Heroes of History : A Brief History of Civilization from Ancient Times to the Dawn of the Modern Age (2001) by Will Durant; variant translation: "...nor enemy harmed me"

No better friend: someone who will kill to protect you; someone who will give their life for you; someone who will be right there in your times of trouble and, thinking of you and your problems, will sacrifice so that you might get through your problem.

No worst enemy: someone who will not hesitate to destroy you even if that means destroying himself in the process; someone who will chase you down to the ends of the earth to extract revenge; someone who will cause you blood and tears and smile when it happens.

How many countries have a Marine Corps?

I am not sure of the exact numbers, but from personal experience as a US Marine, I know the following countries have Marines: Argentina Chile South Korea North Korea Great Britain United States Which makes more than three, the previous answer. According to Wikipedia There are 53 countries. 22 Of which are considered "historical Marines. I am not positive if all these countries still have operational Marine Corps, as I believe the Handbook for Marine NCO's states a different number.......11 I believe, but it's been a while.

Are there Green berets in the Marine Corps?

To my knowledge no. The Green Berets are Army Special forces and without enlisting in the army you wouldn't be able to join. A possible exception to this may be in the Delta Force. But the Marines recently made a special forces unit just as good if not better than the Army Special Forces. Keep in mind though that any special forces training is ridiculously hard, usually requires you to have field experience, and often times people come to you instead of vise versa. So its not really like just signing up for the swim team.

What is the cause of pectus excavatum?

Definition

Pectus excavatum describes an abnormal formation of the rib cage that gives the chest a caved-in or sunken appearance.

Alternative Names

Funnel chest

Considerations

Pectus excavatum is a congenital (present at birth) abnormality that can be mild or severe. It usually develops during pregnancy.

It is caused by too much growth of the connective tissue that joins the ribs to the breastbone. This causes the sternum to malform inward. The child typically has a depression in the center of the chest over the sternum, and this may appear quite deep.

If pectus excavatum is severe, it may affect the heart and lungs, making exercise difficult. Also, the appearance of the chest may cause psychological difficulty for the child.

Pectus excavatum may occur as the only abnormality, or together with other syndromes. Often, patients also have a heart problem called mitral valve prolapse.

Common Causes

Pectus excavatum will often occur by itself without any family history or other defects or problems. Other causes include:

Call your health care provider if

Contact your health care provider if:

  • You develop chest pain
  • You develop trouble breathing
  • You feel depressed or angry about your condition
  • You notice decreased exercise tolerance
  • You notice redness, swelling, or discharge from the area
What to expect at your health care provider's office

Your health care provider will perform a physical examination. An infant with pectus excavatum may have other symptoms and signs that, when taken together, define a specific syndrome or condition.

The health care provider will also ask questions about you or your child's medical history, such as:

  • When did you first notice this?
  • Is it getting better, worse, or staying the same?
  • Have any other family members had an unusual-shaped chest?
  • What other symptoms are there?

Tests may be done to rule out suspected disorders. These tests may include:

Pulmonary or cardiac function tests may be done to determine how severely the lungs and heart are affected.

This condition can be surgically repaired. Surgery is generally advised if you have other problems, such as trouble exercising. In addition, some people undergo surgery for cosmetic reasons. Your health care provider can help you make decisions about your therapy.

Why are the US Marines so effective?

There are four reasons that can attributed to their success.

First, the corps is all volunteer and therefore, no one is there that does not want to be.

Second, the training is rigorous and extreme. Within this training comes the marine fighting ethos that marines live and die by. The outstanding history of the Marine Corps is instilled in each marine during this training.

Thirdly, the discipline of each Marine is the highest level of discipline of any fighting force (somewhat biased here seeing that I was a Marine). This discipline is the unseen ingredient in many battles that produces a victory for the marines in that battle.

Marines never, never, let down the man fighting beside them. Each and every Marine will give his life to save the Marine fighting next to him.

There is another aspect of Marine fighting that was true in the 60s during the Vietnam war, but may not be so unique today and that is that the Marines were successful because they went straight at the enemy and did not stop till he was defeated. The strategy that the Marines taught the smallest fighting unit-the squad- was always the same---take the battle to the enemy immediately and without hesitation and do not stop until you have defeated him.

because we are Americas pit-bull. we are teased, beaten, starved, mis-treated, and kept in small dirty, disgusting quarters. every now and then we get cut loose and take our frustrations out on everyone around us. YUT!

Why are flat-footed people not allowed in the US Army?

The reason why flat footed people aren't allowed in the Army is because of the shoes that they have to wear and also because if shooting at a close range they can lose balance of the gunshot won't be effective.

Flat foot people don't usually get into the army because of not only the boots they have to wear, but the Army has to travel by foot a lot. There are already multiple foot problems in the Army and a flat footed person would have many more problems with their feet and possibly hold up their unit. Having flat feet has nothing to do with firing off a rifle.

The above is not true. the doctors at MEPS will tell you if your flat feet are disqualifying or not. If your flat feet are symptomatic (painful) then they will disqualify you, or if you have ever been prescribed custom orthotics by a doctor. If they are asymptomatic (not painful) then the doctor will tell you if you can join or not.

Did the pilots during World War 2 that flew off the navy carriers fall under the army air corp or where they navy?

US Navy Aircraft Carriers normally operated US Navy aircraft flown by US Navy pilots; however sometimes during WW2 these aircraft carriers had US Army Air Force or US Marine Corps aircraft on-board to be flown-off by Army or Marine pilots. This was for ferrying operations. These aircraft would take off from the carriers but land on an airfield. Army pilots were not trained to land on carriers, neither were the Army aircraft equipped for carrier landings. US Marine pilots & Marine aircraft could operate from carriers if necessary, until they could be established at an airfield.

How many men were in a Marine Corps squad in the Vietnam war?

The number will almost always vary depending upon the branch of service (Marines, Army, Navy, etc.), nationality (German, Japanese, French, American, etc.), and era (1600s, 1700s, 1800s, 1900s, etc.). But the rule of them will be 12 men.

The infantry squad (more commonly called a "rifle squad") is the US Army's smallest unit. The second smallest unit is the platoon. Naturally, two or more squads will make up a platoon. The "platoon" is the US Army's smallest unit led by an officer. Not commanded, but led. The Captain of the company is the commander, and his "Rifle" company will consist of 2 or more "rifle platoons" each led by a Lieutenant. Sgts will lead squads.

In combat (for some unknown reason) theres usually a shortage of men (in the field); consequently a squad on patrol could consist of less than 12 men. "Unknown" reason, because theres always an awful lot of men in the rear areas of nearly all wars. But in the field on patrol? Almost always a shortage.

What was the size of the US Army in 1940?

World War II in Europe is generally agreed to have begun when Nazi tanks rolled into Poland on September 1, 1939. It would be another 27 months before the US entered the war. On September 3, 1939, the US Army got a new commanding general when George C. Marshall was sworn in as the new Chief of Staff. Marshall inherited an army that was the 21st largest in the world, right behind Bulgaria. The US Army was primed and equipped to refight WWI, and Marshall had a huge task to expand and modernize, and completely reorganize the US Army. There were less than 250,000 officers and men when Marshall began his work. In 1940, Congress passed the first peacetime draft in American history, to draft one million men into the Army to serve for one year. This draft legislation came up for renewal the next year, in August 1941, and passed Congress by the margin of a single vote. The million men drafted in 1940 were not let out after a year, as they had been promised, and were generally pretty aggravated about it. By December 1941, when the US was in the war, the US Army still numbered less than two million, a smaller force by far than that which Hitler had sent against the Russians in the summer of 1941. But, by the end of the war, under Marshall's guidance, the US Army had expanded to over eight million men and was victorious around the globe. Marshall was also in charge of the Air Force, which was still the US Army Air Force until 1947, so he commanded another three million men there.
