Does a commissioned officer loose his commission after resignation?

When you resign, you're resigning your commission. If they're simply resigning to transfer to a reserve component, they would keep their commission. Otherwise, they're no longer commissioned officers.

For Marines, we have to request a reserve commission. It is not automatically given. Your name is sent back in front of the US Senate and reappointed a reserve officer.

The traditionally will equate to a misdamenor charge in the civilian sector. However it is probable not to effect you in civilian employment, being some charges are not consistant with civilian law. Example in the military if you do not go to work on time you can receive a BCD (over a period of time and LOR's of corse) but in the civilian sector there is not a charge that would be ammicable in this case.

Are the US Marines part of the US Navy?

They have been brushed by the Tar and served before the mast since their creation, but today the U.S. Marine Corps is not a branch of the U.S. Navy - it is a separate service branch within the Department of the Navy, the civilian branch of the Department of Defense tasked with overseeing the Navy and Marine Corps.

Since the Navy and Marines have historically been so closely associated (Marines are embarked on Naval vessels, and the two have always participated closely in joint operations for many years) the decision was made to bring the two under one authority.

Even so, the two branches have their own separate and distinct Chain of Command - the Secretary of the Navy oversees the two, but the Navy is headed by the Chief of Naval Operations, while the Marines are commanded by the Commandant of the Marine Corps. Both officers are normally 4-star ranks.

  • good physical health.
  • Ability to pass the Army Physical Training Test.
