Alfred King, a store owner from Kansas wanted to expand Armistice Day beyond veterans of World War I to celebrate all veterans. In 1953, He campaigned locally and then, with the help of his Congressional Representative, a bill declaring it a holiday went through Congress and was signed into law on May 26, 1954 by President Dwight David Eisenhower.

Veterans Day honors US Veterans. It began as a celebration of the peace after World War I ended, and was originally called Armistice Day (armistice refers to the end of open hostilities which began on November 11, 1918. The peace treaty ending WWI was signed in June, 1919).

Veterans have fought in wars to preserve the freedom of the country and to accomplish goals important to the country. They have risked their lives, lost limbs, an many have died.

They started veterans day to remember all the soldiers who faught for us and some who died, It is a day to remember and give thanks to every soldiers.

These European countries do have days of remembrance for those who have died fighting for their freedom, they just don't celebrate them on November 11th.

We celebrate Remembrace Day (Also called Veterans Day or Armistice Day) on this date because the armistice that ended World War One was signed on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, on November 11th, 1918.

It seems to me that the origin would be from Genesis in the Old Testament. As God creates the world in that narrative, the end of his creative periods always culminates in ,"...[such and such]... was the [first, second, etc.] day." Makes sense to me. Or it could be coincidence.

Veterans Day is called "armistice" in French, or very commonly "le onze novembre" after Nov. 11, where it is held.

November 11 is a significant date, not an arbitrary date. When the bill establishing Monday Holidays went into effect and Veteran's Day was moved to a Monday, many felt the historic significance of November 11th would be forgotten. In 1978 Veteran's Day was removed from the group of Monday Holidays and designated back to the original date.
