The files stay right where they were, they're just marked by the operating system as available to be overwritten by something else. The OS no longer displays them to you, but they're probably still there♠. If you just deleted something, you have a very good chance of recovering it using any of many software 'undelete' programs. If you have deleted something that you need to recover, the best thing to do is stop using the computer right away. The more things you do and the more files you download or move, the more likely that some or all of what you're trying to recover will get written over by something else. If possible, use another computer to download a software 'undelete' program and put it on a CD or thumb drive. Install it on your computer. If you can, choose to install the program to a drive other than the one that contained the files that you deleted. Run the program to recover the files.

The CMOS battery is more for protecting your settings (like BIOS and computer clock) in the event of power outages. Resetting the computer BIOS via CMOS battery removal should leave the files on your hard drive untouched, because they have already been magnetized onto the disk. I don't remember how this is done exactly, but you have to uninstall the bootloader. You should reinstall fedora on the same partition it was beofore just to get XP booting again, then search google for some answers.

The old computers need to have the harddisk heads "parked" before the computer is recycled. Otherwise, the heads could hit the magnetic surface, and then a couple of clusters are compromised. Old computer means older than a 80286. If your computer is older than that, you need to park the heads before shutting down. Otherwise, the heads will automatically be parked.
