What made Winston Churchill famous?

In the context of World War II, Winston Churchill became famous as the 'bulldog-leader' of Great Britain who refused to give in to the Nazi menace in 1940 and beyond. Appointed as Prime Minister of the island-nation in May of 1940, Churchill immediately galvanized British leadership and the British people by declaring that Great Britain would not surrender to Germany: he helped the nation resist even when it alone stood between the Nazis and their final victory in 1940-1941.

What did Churchill do about the Holocaust?

It seems incredible to think now, in this age of great communication, that 70 years ago the Prime Minister of one of the most powerful empires this world has ever known was unaware of what was going on throughout Europe. What could Churchill do anyway ? He himself was responsible for Bengali Holocaust, 6 million starved Indians, and was racist and for eugenics. Britain was fighting for its very survival. But I am of the opinion that Churchill knew very little about what was happening in, say, southern Poland, until the Russians relieved these terrible places. Yes, anti semitism was commonly known in Britain before the war, but what this had resulted in in terms of the mass of murders was a wholly different scale. It was one thing, if you'll pardon my comparison, to be horrid to the Jews, but to kill millions of them was something different. Britain did not go to war over the Jews, it went to war, eventually, to prevent the further expansion of Germany in Europe. The sad truth is that the Holocaust was seen as a by product of WW2, largely unseen until 1945, one might think a blind eye was turned. I think there wrere two blind eyes. When the Allies arrived at Belsen the shock was palpable & the horror never for a moment envisaged. but the fact remains even had Churchill known there was little he could have done more than he did, at least as Prime Minister from 1940. I'm not sure the conjecture of what would have happened had he been in power before that time is worth consideration.

What did Winston Churchill think about India's independence?

Winston Churchill in Parliament for India Independence.

When Mr. Clement Attlee, Prime Minister of United Kingdom, in June 1947, introduced the Indian Independence Act in the British Parliament, Sir Winston Churchill, war time Prime Minister of England, argued:-

"----------Power will go to the hands of rascals, rogues, freebooters; all Indian leaders will be of low caliber & men of straw. They will have sweet tongues & silly hearts. They will fight amongst themselves for power & India will be lost in political squabbles. A day would come when even air & water... would be taxed in India."

Was Winston Churchill sexist?

During his early days, Churchill was most assuredly racist and imperialist. His stance towards "the beastly" lesser races is somewhat distressing, when put into context with the up-right defender of freedom that many of us recognise.

However, his opposition to Hitler in world war two was merely an attempt to defend his empire from a foreign power.

In short, Churchill was racist even to the British imperialists at the time, since he was still to the far right of politics.

What was the significance of the u-boat in world war 2?

The Battle of the Atlantic, as it was called, lasted from 1939 till 1945. The U-boats were defeated mainly be the following: *As in WW1 the Allies relied on convoys which were escorted, for example, by destroyers. *Radar (of varying degrees of sophistication) sometimes made it possible to locate U-boats. *In fine weather, submerged U-boats were often visible to aircraft flying from carriers, and depth-charges could be used. Is Winston churchills speech you will fight them onn the beaches persuasive?

Because it was a masterpiece of Old English and an insult to the French! Every word of that speech was the way it would have been said in England in the year 1000, even to the unusual wording "landing-grounds". Every word that is, except for one. He said "we will never surrender" and surrender is a French word and he was disgusted at the way they had capitualted to the Germans.

Hitler didn't announce WWII. A world war is when one country attacks another and eventually, a lot of countries get dragged into it.
