72 Questions

What are unreasonable work demands in workplace bullying?

Unreasonable work demands in the workplace classed as bullying:

  • When Management or a Supervisor state regular threats of dismissal without cause.
  • Anyone in Management or Supervisor including any other employee publicly humiliating an employee; calling them useless; unfit for their position, etc., in front of other Management members or employees.
  • The work the victim does is given credit to someone else. This also includes stealing someone else's work and taking credit for it.
  • Management or Supervisors that have their 'favorites' and leave out one or more other employees who are good at their job and the 'favorites' get the promotions; bonus' and raises.
  • Denying an employee of training opportunities in the company.
  • When Supervisors work close to Management and lie about the character of a certain employee or employees. The employee is not aware of it or, in some cases is informed, but they are not given the chance to defend themselves. Good Management would look into the complaint further, but some companies either do not care; they want these types of bullying tactics or they feel they are too busy to get involved. Character Assassination is cruel because the employee it is aimed at cannot defend themselves and Management is taking the word of one or more people in higher positions. It is called a 'smear campaign.'
  • Anyone in the company that creates malicious rumors regarding one or more employees when it is not the truth.
  • Management and Supervisors may create social ostracism against an employee. In other words ignore the employee; breaking the link of communication and dividing that employee from getting any important information they may need to do their job well and are snubbed and ostracized.
  • Sexual harassment. This also includes women in positions sexually harassing a male employee (it does happen) or a male sexually harassing a female and often can threaten dismissal if the employee does not cooperate.

How can work place bullying affect a person?

It can really affect a person. When people in office daily discuss you home activities, are involved in hacking and ransacking, then you tend to lose respect for the bunch of people.

In my case when I was new, very regular and punctual for the first six months (did not take a single leave apart from the sick leaves). I found my folders of database deleted. my files missing, being part of gossips by my immediate seniors.

There were two sided people, I was made to write view-point, it was appreciated by the people who do proof reading. Then the same people told my PM that its not up-to the mark while they told me that its one of the best they have ever seen and PM is indifferent to create differences.

I did changes for 79 times in one view point, where I was told that it will be published by eow, but the Friday never came.

Meeting are called to tell me I am at risk and I should leave the city asap, but when I have police protection, they tell my leave because performance is not upto the mark.

I deactivate 2567 news and deals, show them to my lead, next they reappear, (telling me that you have not done it properly when the last time it was showing deactivated successfully). People saw it happening.

Suddenly 2 plants with 0 capacity in 10000 plants are blamed on me, when I checked properly, now when I ask for it they say it had been corrected.

I am told that key field completeness is not done , when its reflecting 85% from 62% on galaxy.

My view points are never published and people ask me for parties when they will be published this friday, while these people show me their view points on galaxy (each word and entire phrases are copy pasted)

This is work place bullying, allegations which cannot be proved.

Our new boss wants some of us to come over for dinner and a movie nothing personal but none of us want to go how do we tell our boss no with out offending him?

  • Since the invite from your boss is nothing personal and there is more than two people going then your new boss is trying to be hospitable so you can get to know each other on a more personal level (be on your toes and have good manners) and it would be very unwise and foolish not to take this opportunity handed to all of you a silver platter. In the future this could mean better working conditions and possibly raises in pay. This is one evening out of your long lives. Get use to the fact that there will be many times each of you or even a group of you may not want to do something, but will have to face the reality of it. Be smart and go.

What are some good comebacks to sexually motivated insults?

There are two answers to this question:

The first is to use your smart tongue to come back with witty, biting remarks that put the bullies in their place and keep them there. There have been many accounts from people who were not big or strong at school, but kept the bullies at bay with their sharp remarks. But it may not always be wise to make sexually motivated insults back at them. That puts you on the same level as them. If there is an investigation you may be found equally at fault. Your only excuse is that they started it, which may be difficult to prove. The second way might be better.

The second way is to ignore them, but take up the issue with someone else in authority. Sexually motivated insults are illegal in most countries and are certainly bullying if they take place in a school or a workplace. Managers, Union representatives, teachers and school principals all have a duty to keep a safe environment for their workers and pupils. If they don't listen to you at first, keep telling them, and go over their heads to theirmanagers, if they do nothing.

Why do people like bullying people?

People bully other people because they are jealous of what you have. If you are very clever, you may get bullied, also is you are very sporty. Sometimes, people bully others because they feel sorry for them, they just don't want to show it in front of their friends. Also, bullying is a way to get popular, so if your friends are popular and they want you to bully someone, that person may do that to impress their friends.

Describe a bullying incident in the workplace?

I worked for the State of Alaska. I had a horrible boss who was in all sense of the word a bully. She had a whole repertoire of things to do to new employees. On the list was making degrading comments under her breath, like when I had never used the type of copy machine the state had, she said, "I thought you knew how to use a copy machine." Another one of her tricks was to continually jump around the corner and say, "How's it going?" This happened every 10 minutes throughout the day. She would also pretend to leave for the day and the suddenly reappear to see if you were working. I was taught how to do data entry on some forms and I would work on these in my spare time. Every time she saw me doing them she would suddenly come up with at least three projects she wanted me to do instead. It's like I was taught to do the forms, but I was never supposed to do them. One day, when I was still speaking to her, I made the mistake of telling her I broke my leg 3 months ago and that it had taken me a while to be able to walk again. The next day she had the brilliant idea of cleaning the entire office which involved moving lots of 50 pound boxes. She wouldn't allow me to use the cart to move boxes because she was using it to put her stuff on it. I ended up re-injuring my leg, as well as my back, and I know she did it purposely. Another job I had was to deliver mail and she accused me of leaving the building rather than delivering the mail on several occasions, even though it wasn't true. Her goal was to get rid of every new employee in 3 months for some reason. She finally managed to get rid of me by digging up something on my background check, which HR didn't feel the need to do, but old bossy did and she managed to get me fired for it. When I applied for unemployment, the state ruled in my favor and said that this woman had created a hostile work environment. However, she did manage to make it so the State of Alaska would never hire me again, in spite of the fact that I worked for several departments and everyone had liked me and my work. Bullies can come in all sizes and shapes. This woman was eventually removed from a supervisory job because of her tactics.

___________

I am a male care assistant who works in a local care home. I have no problem working with many of the staff, but one of them is in with management and every time I am working with her, she calls me into the office for no reason at all and issues me with a supervision warning. The most recent one is that she has managed to convince the manager that I have been causing trouble with the staff and spreading lies. When the manager herself spoke to me about this she also called me a liar to my face whilst in the office. She almost fired me because of this. Is there anything I can do about such appalling treatment as it happens every time I am on her shift?

  • You are in a difficult situation and it might be too late to sort this out satisfactorily.
  • You need to ask them to put their complaints in writing, so you know exactly what is the problem from their point of view.
  • You should also keep a record of every incident, with times and dates and details of what was said.
  • You should look for other support. Do you have a union representative in the workplace or have you contacted the union? Are there other staff who agree with you?
  • Is there someone above the manager that your union can approach? Pressure from above can often be the only way to resolve the issue.
A:In New South Wales in 2004 a 16 year old factory worker was the subject of violent bullying - he was wrapped in plastic by his co-workers, rolled around on a trolley and covered in sawdust and glue.

The director and the factory foreman were both found to have breached the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2000 and were personally liable for this bullying. The director was fined $9000 and the foreman $12000 as he was personally responsible for supervising the employees.

What is the key to preventing workplace bullying is it to understand the difference between authoritarian and authoritative relationships?

Well there is an answer but it's not to understand the difference between authoritarian and authoritative relationships because there is no difference. An authoritarian is a person who has authority over someone else. An authoritative relationship is when someone has authority over the other person. See the difference? No because there is NONE. So back to your question, if you know they are bullying then you obviousley understand that your not in an authoritated relationship with this person, right? So take it to the big boss. Nikki-16 Leave msg's. Tell me if I helped at all. ;)

What should you do about bullying as a supervisor?

You should stop it.

What are the laws in your state or country? Are there Occupational Health and Safely Laws? Are there laws so that an employer has to provide a safe environment? That also includes safety from bullying and discrimination, as well as physical safety.

If you are a supervisor and you condone bullying then you could be held liable in the future. Sometimes bullying goes on to physical injury and hospitalization. Serious charges. Don't turn a blind eye. For your own safely as well as the workers you are supposed to be supervising.

When is harassment illegal in the workplace?

How is sexual harassment committed in the workplace?

  • Many individuals think that women are just sexually harassed, but, it is a growing trend that some men are sexually harassed (not as much, but it happens) if there boss is a female,, but women or men can also be sexually harassed by their own kind. Sexual harassment is sexual discrimination that violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and it is the Employment Opportunity Commision (EEOC) which is the Federal agency that enforces this act. Making a sexual harassment charge against another is a serious offence so the victim should have proof or witnesses to the effect. It has happened where someone has purposely made a sexual harassment charge against someone that is totally inocent and this could cost that person not only their reputations, but difficulty finding another place of employment. If the person filing the charges is lying then they will have to deal with the outcome and charges will be made against them. To make sexual harassment clear it is when someone makes disgusting comments to you; physical gestures re sex; asking for sexual favors in order for that person to receive a promotion; keep their job or they will be fired if they do not do so and this is called 'Quid pro quo.' Sexual harassment is also someone who is hostiile to the target of the harassment. It is the responsibility of the employer to control their workplace and not allow anyone to sexually harass another even if it means firing or pressing charges against someone of higher authority that is commiting the act. It is important that the employee who is being sexually harassed take immediate action and the employers should take immediate action by establishing a policy for the prevention, reporting, investigation and punishment of any sexual harassment in the workplace.

How can you prove your innocence against bullying employer?

  • Document as much as possible. You can start by keeping a journal, for example. Each time an incident takes place, log it in when it's fresh in your mind. It's against most company policies to take paperwork out of the office, so it may be a good idea to write it in your home computer, for example.
  • During any write-ups, if you disagree, include a comment stating your standpoint, but sign it. Otherwise they can fire you for insubordination and you will have provided them with the ammo they want.
  • If not provided with copies of anything you sign, request one. You have a right to have a personal copy of anything you sign.
  • Know your rights. I suggest you read your company policy thoroughly. In this economy, it may be hard to stand up to a bully boss, but educating yourself is half the battle. You don't have to be the victim of a bully boss, but if you've endured it thus far, at least be prepared to assert yourself intelligently should you need to.

What is the big deal?

It is not a big deal.

If you are bullied, stand up to them!

Tell a teacher,

Tell your parents,

Tell the police!

What should you do if your boss is an idiot?

  • Calling anyone an idiot is pretty harsh although there are some unintelligent people holding down positions that makes one wonder how they got their position in the first place. He is your boss so either you can discuss any problems you have with him and perhaps try to help him out or you can look for other work. Try to look at him as just a person and not your boss. He may have personal problems; health problems or be on medications that can cause him to act in a way you cannot handle. If you decide to stay and do nothing then you will only get more frustrated and resentful so above are your only two choices.

Who should determines if behaviour is sexual harassment the alleged victim the supervisor or HR?

The alleged victim is NEVER allowed to determine if the conduct was illegal - she has a conflict of interests. The supervisor (line management) determines if the law and employer rules were violated, HR assists and advises, but imposes no discipline.

It should be obvious that if the alleged harasser is the supervisor, then the supervisor has a conflict of interest as well. Ultimately, whether the behavior constitutes sexual harassment or not may in some cases have to be decided by a court.

In a practical sense, never. Only complainants who file with EEOC or a state agency can ever sue, and almost no one does. Then the agency investigation finds no fault in about 90% of charges, so there is no incentive for employers to settle. Almost no one whose charge is dismissed ever sues, and the few who do win less than 25% of lawsuits.
