There are enzymes in avocados to which people can be allergic if they suffer with latex fruit allergy (e.g. banana allergy). As these enzymes are highest in the skin, eating the skin could lead you o be sensitized to these enzymes and develp a allergic response. However, cooking will denature the enzyme and thus safe, but without a way to test one would ot know if the avocado skin was cooked enough.

Can rabbits eat avocados and tomatoes?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Some fruits and vegetables are okay as a treat, but they shouldn't be a regular part of your rabbit's diet. Rabbits should mostly eat hay; they should also eat pellets and fresh leafy greens daily.

Neither tomato nor avocado are good for rabbits.

Tomato leaves, vines, and stems are toxic to rabbits. Tomato fruit is not toxic, but it isn't very healthy, either; it may not be dangerous as a treat, but there are better treats to choose from (like carrot, blueberry, papaya, or pineapple).

Avocado contain persin, a compound known to be toxic to rabbits. Rabbits should not eat avocado, especially not the leaves or pit.

How long do avocado pits grow roots?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If you live in a temperate climate simply throw it into the compost and you'll get avocadoes sprouting up where you spread the compost.

You can half submerge it in a pot of compost or soil and water it - it will split, send up a shoot and then grow roots.

If you live in a colder climate you can stick tootpicks into the side of the pit and suspend it over a glass or jar. Fill the glass with water so that it touches the bottom of the pit. It will send out a shoot and roots will grow hydroponically down into the water.

These methods will work fine if you want an avocado as a house plant for the foliage. If you are hoping to grow your own avocado fruit be prepared for disappointment. You would be better off buying a grafted tree from a nursery.

The avocado is a forest tree and would not normally bear fruit until it reaches the top of the forest canopy.

If you grow your own avocado from the stone you should wait till the main shoot is 1 foot tall and then cut it back to 6 inches. This will encourage the plant to produce side shoots and will increase the liklihood of it bearing fruit sooner.

Great Answer! Let me add one note, When your plant is successfully grown for indoor display it does not like to go outside in direct sunlight, just keep it inside. The direct sunlight will kill it within a matter of hours.

What preservatives are in Tostitos Avocado salsa?

User Avatar

Asked by HappyHappyJoeyJoey Hello

Yes. There are preservatives in almost all packaged foods, usually along with artificial colours, flavours, and other chemical ingredients designed to preserve the food, stop it from sticking together, falling apart or going mouldy, and make it more visually attractive. Many of these additives can have detrimental health effects, and all of them are unnecessary for a healthy diet. In fact, a healthy diet is generally one that avoids them. They also usually have a disagreeable taste but, if you frequently eat packaged foods, you tend not to notice the taste because you are so used to it. If, however, you treat yourself to a diet of fresh, delicious and preferably organic food (such as a delicious home-made salsa) for a few weeks and then try your packaged food (such as tostitos salsa), you will be shocked at the strange and unpleasant flavours all those chemical additives lend the food. (You'll also be healthier, slimmer and much, much kinder to the environment by avoiding all that manufacturing, packaging and transportation.) Next time you're in the supermarket, try this: read the labels of every food you pick up. You may be shocked. If ingredients have numbers rather than words, you can be sure these are chemicals. What do you think could be so bad that a manufacturer would rather use a number to describe it than a word?
