Chiropractic

Chiropractic is from Greek words meaning done by hand. It is a system of healing or therapy that deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the skeletal, muscular and nervous systems. The method of treatment commonly involves manipulation of the spinal column and other body structures. It is grounded in the principle that the body can heal itself when the skeletal, muscular and nervous systems are all functioning properly.

Can a chiropactor cause occipital neuralgia?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Chiropractors offer great help in the treatment of occipital neuralgia. These experts are skilled in providing treatment for the spinal column and nervous system. They use various treatment methods to relieve their symptoms. Plus, they give quick relief by reducing inflammation and irritation of the occipital nerve. The sacro-occipital technique (SOT) is a type of chiropractor who specializes in treating pain by improving spine alignment. They also help relieve any chronic pain.

When it comes to occipital neuralgia, it can help due to the tight muscles that can cause discomfort and pain. So, there are fewer chances of getting occipital neuralgia if you have a treatment from a chiropractor. But, if you feel pain in your neck and head after chiropractic therapy, then you should seek medical help promptly.

Requirements vary from country to country, and from school to school. In North America you need 3 years of sciences and humanities including some very specific requirements (organic chemistry, physics, psychology, etc). Some colleges recommend or require a bachelor degree before entry. It is thought that a Bachelor's degree will be a requirement at some stage. There are about a dozen chiropractic colleges in the united states. To get an idea of the requirements try www.wschiro.edu.

What are the educational requirements for a chiropractic?

User Avatar

All States and the District of Columbia regulate the practice of chiropractic and grant licenses to chiropractors who meet the educational and examination requirements established by the State. Chiropractors can practice only in States where they are licensed. Some States have agreements permitting chiropractors licensed in one State to obtain a license in another without further examination, provided that their educational, examination, and practice credentials meet State specifications. Most State boards require at least 2 years of undergraduate education; an increasing number are requiring a 4-year bachelor

How difficult is it to get into a Chiropractic college?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Not a medical school per se, but you do need to go to an accredited chiropractic college (after getting your undergraduate degree) in order to be licensed anywhere in the U.S. or Canada.

In North America:

Before a student can attend a chiropractic college he/she must complete at least 3 years of an undergraduate university degree, but most students have completed their entire 4 year degree (eg: bachelor of science). Students with other undergraduate degrees (eg: BA) are also eligible for chiropractic college, but will find it more challenging without significant background in any of the sciences.

Following an undergraduate degree, chiropractic college last 3 or 4 years, depending on which school you choose to attend. The World Health Organization has stated that to become a doctor of chiropractic a student must attend no less than 4200 hours of schooling in a chiropractic college after their undergraduate degree. Some schools squish this all into 3 years with no summer holidays, most spread it over 4 years with 2-month summer breaks. Thus, to become a chiropractor, a student must attend a minimum of 6-8 years of post-secondary education, but most have a full 8 years, (after high-school).

In Australia:

The 3 year Bachelor of Chiropractic Science offers a solid foundation in science based disciplines including, chemistry, physics, biology, physiology, anatomy etc. Central to these are the core teachings in Chiropractic Principles and Techniques. Students intending on practicing as Chiropractors MUST complete the Master Of Chiropractic to gain proficiency, professional recognition and registration in Australia. The master program takes 2 years full time to complete and entrance is granted only to those with a GPA 3.2 or greater in the Bachelor degree. Units in the masters include neurology, spinal orthopaedics, peripheral orthopaedics, radiology, physical rehab, pharmacology, EPT, nutrition, advanced clinical diagnosis, chiropractic principles and techniques etc.

Is a chiropractor a physician?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Answer
If by physician you mean a medical doctor a chiropractor is not a physician.

Chiropractic care is considered to be complementary and alternative medicine by mainstream healthcare. Chiropractors are not licensed to provide primary medical care, perform major surgery or write medical prescriptions in the United States. However there are standard requirements an individual must meet to qualify for a license to practice and chiropractic care is the largest alternative medical profession in the US.

Most people seek chiropractic services for neck and back pain. There are many online sources of information that describe the treatments offered by chiropractors and the many different schools of techniques. In the United States most health plans cover chiropractic services, however, one should make certain the services are covered by their insurance plan before engaging the services of a chiropractor. Opinions differ as to the efficacy of chiropractic treatment.

From the US Department of Labor: Licensure. All States and the District of Columbia regulate the practice of chiropractic and grant licenses to chiropractors who meet the educational and examination requirements established by the State. All doctors must be licensed to practice in the US. Some States have agreements permitting chiropractors licensed in one State to obtain a license in another without further examination, provided that their educational, examination, and practice credentials meet State specifications.

Most State licensing boards require at least 2 years of undergraduate education, but an increasing number are requiring a 4-year bachelor's degree. All boards require the completion of a 4-year program at an accredited chiropractic college leading to the Doctor of Chiropractic degree.

For licensure, most State boards recognize either all or part of the four-part test administered by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners. State examinations may supplement the National Board tests, depending on State requirements. All States except New Jersey require the completion of a specified number of hours of continuing education each year in order to maintain licensure. Chiropractic associations and accredited chiropractic programs and institutions offer continuing education programs.

Can scoliosis be cured by chiropractic?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Answer by Puhlaa:

The answer to this would depend on how old you are, the severity of the scoliosis and whether the scoliosis is functional or structural.

- A structural scoliosis (caused by congenital deformity such as hemivertebrae) can only be corrected with surgery. How severe the curve is will determine if you are a candidate for surgery.

- If you have a functional scoliosis (caused by unequal leg lengths, unilateral muscle trauma, unilateral hip problem, etc.), then if you are not too old (younger than 55) and the curve is not too severe (less than 30 degrees), a chiropractor will likely be able to help reduce or eliminate the scoliosis. Treatments would include one or more of: orthotics, spinal manipulation, stretching, muscle strengthening, etc.

_________________________

It was previously thought that you cannot reverse Scoliosis. Chiropractic Biophysics practitioners have well documented improvements with scoliosis of all degrees. I suggest looking into one in your area by searching for Chiropractic Biophysics online.

There are really no scientifically documented risks when considering chiropractic care besides residual soreness in some patients. However, there are many documented risks associated with surgeries. Chiropractors are just like any other specialist or professional. Just as you can find a bad Dentist, Medical Doctor or mechanic that will take advantage of you, Chiropractors are no different. Ask questions. Feel it out. Go with your gut.

Is a chiropractor is a doctor?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The complete answer to this depends on which country the chiropractor has graduated from their chiropractic program.

Although the term doctor historically means "teacher" (thus only a PhD is a true doctor in the historical sense), today our world considers a doctor to be anyone who has graduated from a post graduate doctorate program.

In Canada, Chiropractors must generally have a 4 year undergraduate degree before starting chiropractic school, then they must complete a 4 year, post graduate, doctorate in chiropractic (8 years total). In 2005, the province of Ontario granted the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) the right to offer a professional health care degree under the Post-secondary Education Choice and Excellence Act. This decision was based on a thorough review by the government of the curriculum taught at CMCC, and the knowledge that its graduates have upon completion of the program. This degree granting right sets the program at CMCC within the hierarchy of education in Ontario as comparable to that of other primary contact health care professions, such as medicine, dentistry, and optometry. As such, in Canada, chiropractors are indeed doctors, doctors of chiropractic.

In most US states, Chiropractors are considered licensed "physicians" (In 2009, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals changed its policy to include Doctors of Chiropractic as physicians). They attend Chiropractic colleges, which are accredited post-graduate institutions requiring the same 4 year undergraduate education as a pre-requisite for admission as most medical schools. In these five academic year (10 semester) programs they study all the same sciences and medical specialties as medical doctors do. Many people are not aware, in Oregon, chiropractors can perform minor surgery and some even still deliver babies. Thus today in the US, chiropractors are indeed qualified as primary care doctors.

In Switzerland, Chiropractors are trained in medical schools along with medical doctors. Thus, in Switzerland, chiropractors are definitely considered doctors.

In comparison to the previous countries described, in Australia chiropractors complete a 4 year undergraduate degree in chiropractic, followed by a 2 year masters degree in chiropractic. As such, chiropractors trained in Australia are NOT considered doctors.

How many have back pains due to heavy backpacks?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Heavy, or improperly worn, backpacks are a very common cause of back pain in adolescents. A study published in the journal SPINE in 2003 (1) surveyed over 1100 kids aged between 12 and 18 years old and found almost 75% of them had back pain that was associated with backpack use.

Similarly, a study published in 2006 in the journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics (2) found that the weights of students' backpacks seemed directly proportional to the likelihood of back pain.

What are the differences between bonesetters and chiropractors?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

In the United States, a D.O. (doctor of osteopathic medicine) is equivalent to an M.D. with exactly the same rights and privileges - for example, a D.O. can prescribe drugs and perform surgery just like any M.D. The medical training of an American D.O. is identical to an M.D. and they are often found in the same residency programs or same practice. Legally a D.O. is considered a medial physician in all 50 states. The same cannot be said for a chiropractor.

What is the difference between chiropody and chiropractor?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A chiropractor provides therapy by manipulating body structures to improve joint, muscle and nerve function. They attend a chiropractic school for their education and training, where they also study radiology and radiography, which qualifies them to take and diagnose from x-rays.

A Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) in the USA is a medical physician equivalent to a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) whereas a chiropractor has not gone through four years of medical school. A non-physician osteopath (different from a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and trained outside of the USA) in every other country is a separate profession from medicine or chiropractic.

How does chiropractic treatment work?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The question is very broad, as chiropractic treatment usually includes many things like manipulation, mobilization, soft-tissue therapy, traction, physiotherapeutic modalities (laser, electrotherapies, etc) diet and exercise recommendations, ergonomic advice, orthotics, etc. However, I will assume that you are asking about the primary treatment that doctors of chiropractic are known for - Spinal manipulation.

There are many theories that may explain how spinal manipulation works. Some proposed theories are:

1 - increases mobility in joints

2 - stimulates mechanoreceptors

3 - resets proprioceptive muscle spindles

4 - causes a systemic release of endorphins

5 - affects the autonomic nervous system

Likely it is not a single mechanism, but a combination of many of the above theories that ultimately results in the favourable outcome that patients get from chiropractic care.
