It's a very hard question to answer, and scholars are trying hard to find an answer. As a general phenomenon in Europe, it wasn't simply the result of the Great Depression. Many of the post-WW1 European dictatorships came into being much earlier. Soviet Union, 1918-21; Italy, 1922; Hungary, 1919-20; Poland, 1925; Romania, 1923(?); Yugoslavia ?. Most of these countries had some of the superficial forms of democracies, but nothing more than that. One should add Spain, Portugal, Austria and of course Germany to the list, also the Baltic Republics. Also, many democracies had only just replaced monarchies, so they were weak, and were easliy overthrown.

In the 1920s Benito Mussolini took power over Italy and ruled the country single-handedly. Soon after, Adolf Hitler took control of a brutal Dictatorship in Germany. And in Spain, Francisco Franco created another dictatorship. These men were known as fascists leaders who control their country through strict discipline and terror.

Fascism became popular in Europe because Benito Mussolini wanted to build a Italian empire in Italy. The idea spread throughout Europe and ultimately Adolf Hitler took this idea and made Germany into a powerful empire.

After ww1 in the treaty of versailles germany was left with lots of debts and lost some land this lead to social unrest in the people they wanted somwone who can give them jobs.so hitler came along in 1933 he wanted more space ans territory for germany so he expandes the country along with the president of italy mussolini and he got more land by claiming countries like France, Poland and rhineland etc. So i can say that the economy and need to get a country back together led to fascism, because fascism is kinda like military and nationalism together. Hope this helps :)

Short answer is Italy expected huge territorial gains and economic benefit for switching sides in World War One. The Italians suffered huge losses but was bankrupted by World War One and the promised territorial gains were reneged on by the Allies. The French and the British on the other hand gained all of Germany's former colonies in Asia and Africa.

The Italians especially the war veterans felt betrayed.

The postwar Italian government was unable to bring Italy out of economic and social bankruptcy.

The Italians turned away from the Marxists and Communists because they were anti-patriotic and anti-Christian.

Mussolini's Fascist movement appealed to the patriotism and nationalism of the disgruntled war veterans. Mussolini was a war veteran and ex-socialist.

With democracy failing in Italy the Italians felt the had only two choices the fascists or the communists.

The 1930s were a period of time in Europe after between WWI and WWII. WWI was devastating to the countries that were involved, causing economic issues mainly. Fascism first started in Italy with Benito Mussolini. It then spread to Germany and Spain. Usually in a time of political and economic turmoil (such as during a recession or war), voters turn towards radical solutions, and fascists are extreme right-winged.
