The attack on Pearl Harbor brought a quiet nation to its feet. At this time in history no one was going to hurt another American while the nation sat back and watched. Everyone jumped in to help wherever they could. The men lined up to enlist in the war, the women went to the factories to fill the men's shoes, and eventually making the equipment and machinery they needed to fight the war. Wives and daughters kept businesses open til the men returned.

It immediately pulled America into WW2. It also rallied the American public behind the effort to totally defeat Japan.

The United States took a definitive stance in World War II by declaring war on Japan. Previously, the United States had been neutral with Allied proclivities, but now it was a new Allied Power. Within the following days, the Nazi Germans and the Italians declared war on the United States to reciprocate the US declaration of war on Japan. However, since the United States' strongest ally was the United Kingdom, both FDR and Churchill found it more prudent to put the strongest effort in winning the war in Europe before turning their effort more strongly to the Pacific.

Naturally, because of the declaration of war, the United States ceased trade with the Axis powers and all Axis-Occupied Countries or Partners.

AnswerFor one, the military started to believe in the value of the newly developed radar installation. Before then, they didn't have much confidence, but the radar operator had seen a rather large indication of incomming aircraft and blamed it on birds instead of the possibility of the Japanese invasion.

Also, the attack resulted in an immediate U.S. declaration of war against Japan. Japanes Americans were not trusted since other Japanese had been assuring government officials that they wanted peace and that there was no possibility of an attack, right up to the moment of attack.

Maybe it wasn't right to send all Japanese Americans to camps, but U.S. officials didn't see much of an option.

AnswerThe immediate effect was to disarm the last of Japan's Pacific arena enemies.

France and the Netherlands were occupied by Germany and in no condition to assist their huge colonies in southeast Asia. Britain had its hands full defending north Africa and the British Isles from Germany, so it too could lend only nominal aid to its sizable Far East colonies. That left only the USA which maintained the Pearl Harbor fleet to defend not just the west coast of the USA, but the large American colonial empire in Alaska, Hawaii, the Philippines, and Wake island.

By destroying the main fighting power of the USA Pacific fleet at Pearl, the Japanese were given free reign for about a year in the Pacific. They ran a brilliant campaign and conquered vast territories.

Unfortunately for them the second phase of the war was not as successful. Pearl Harbor may have been a military disaster for the USA but it also unified the nation behind the war effort. The US fleet was quickly rebuilt and with the aggressive US Marine Corp as infantry, the two military arms counterattacked. A series of devastating military failures ensued for Japan, culminating in the surrender of the home islands in 1945.

The strike as a failurePearl Harbor was an absolute failure for the Japanese and hastened their eventual demise, yes it is true that many battleships were sunk, these due to an outmoded naval military philosophy were the primary targets of the strike but carriers were ofcourse the principle element of modern naval warfare and the failure to sink any of them (as they were out on exercises) ment that the strike effectively did not really dint the American capacity to wage war at sea. By far the most significant failing of the Japanese strike was its inability to knock out the operational capacity of Pearl as a naval base. Infact the final strike was about to launch which would have crippled the allimportant refeuling infrastructure on the island but it was called off for fear of us carriers arriving and sinking the vulerable Japanese carriers. In hindsight we know that this risk did not exist and that this failure was one of the worst of the war for the Japanese, American ships continued to work out of Pear shortly after the attack and it came to nothing beyond getting Japan a powerful enemy who Japan could not hope to match in industry or technology

The bombing of Pearl Harbor took place on Sunday, December 7th, 1941, just before 8:00 AM. Japan attacked Pearl Harbor without an official declaration of war, nor with any sign that hostilities were begun. The US lost 188 aircraft, 2 US Navy battleships (the USS Arizona and the USS Utah, I think), and 1 minelayer (a warship, aircraft or automobile that can place explosive mines). Personnel losses: 2,388 killed and 1.178 injured. Damaged ships were: 3 cruisers, 1 destroyer, and 6 battleships (1 deliberately grounded, and 2 sunk at berth). Many Japanese men were thrown in jail, and many families forced to live in internment camps like Manzanar (read "Farewell to Manzanar" by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston). Japanese-Americans also faced much racism, (being called "Japs," from which many Japanese still take offense today), even after being freed from internment.
