Why do people lose their hair if they have cancer?

One nice explanation from Yahoo answers.

Cancer is a disease in which certain cells in the body mutate and begin to grow uncontrollably. Most normal cells have a 'trigger' or 'off switch' to tell them to stop growing at a certain point . . cancer cells lose that ability.

Some types of chemotherapy were created to target a cancer cells uncontrolled 'growth' . . the idea is to kill the cancer cells by using a medication that will stop it from 'growing'. The medication will kill all cells in the human body that 'grow' . . and hair cells grow . . the medication cannot tell the difference between a cancer cell and a hair cell . . so it kills them both. Thus a cancer patient will lose their hair. Once the chemotherapy is stopped or treatment is done than the hair will grow back.

Is pain in the neck associated with breast cancer?

Yes. My breast cancer was sensitive to pressure which was painful. I also had armpit pain. I consulted my GYNs and had the lump biopsied, but he disregarded the armpit pain. I went to another GYN and a local oncologist who also said nothing was in my armpit. I then went to MD Anderson in Houston Texas and they found carcinoma in the lymph node in the armpit and three other lumps. So listen to your body. MD Anderson is also having me do chemo first to get all those traveling cancer cells BEFORE surgery.

My wife had underarm pain and also a lump. Turned out she was at stage 3C Breast Cancer. The Cancer started locally in the breast and then spread regionally to the lymph nodes with thirty nodes being cancerous.

Well, some deodorants do contain Triclosan, which by some is considered carcinogenous. But blaming cancer strictly on deodorants would be pretty much like blaming getting drunk on the last drink only.

What animals cure cancer?

Cancer has never been observed in naked mole rats. While the exact mechanism is not known, it is proposed that this is because of the presence of an additional gene that prevents cellular overcrowding at a much earlier stage than in most other mammals.

What is the blood supply to the lungs?

Blood leaving the liver can reach the lungs only via the right heart. It travels for the liver through the hepatic [liver] vein to the vena cava [the main vein carrying blood leaving the body], into the right heart [first the right atrium, then the right ventricle], and then through the pulmonary [lung] artery to the lungs .

What does cancer do to you?

Cancerous cells divide uncontrollably. Usually they form a lump of tissue called a tumour. The exception to this is leukaemia, where the cancerous white cells do not form a lump but instead multiply in the bloodstream, stopping the blood from functioning normally.

On its own a single tumour can make you quite ill, for example by pressing against nerves, blocking the digestive system or blood vessels, or by releasing hormones that can affect the normal workings of your body.

Things can get much worse, however, if the cancer becomes malignant and spreads. This happens when a single cancerous cell breaks away from the main tumour and starts growing and dividing elsewhere in the body.

To do this, it must acquire more mutations that allow it to survive in other parts of the body. For a cancer cell to spread, it must be able to do two things that the normal cell it grew from could not:

  • it must be able to leave its usual environment and travel through the blood or lymph system, a process called invasion.
  • when it arrives at its new location, it must be able to make new blood vessels grow around it and supply it with oxygen and nutrients, a process known as angiogenesis.

The whole process of a tumour gaining new mutations as it divides and then spreading to other parts of the body is called metastasis. Once a tumour metastasises, it is much more difficult to treat, and can make you much more ill because more areas of the body are affected. Different types of cancer often 'prefer' to spread to other sites in the body. For example, prostate cancer often spreads to the bones.

Sometimes cells can divide uncontrollably without being able to spread. These cells form a benign tumour, which can be easily removed with surgery.

Can you refuse treatment and choose to die with cancer?

I am not positive on this but..... I think that if someone is suicidal they treat it as if it is a person who is planning to kill a person, even if it is their own. Killing a person is killing a person no matter what and when someone is a threat to a human being's life, they can do what ever they want to you (in their minds, even though it probably shouldn't be that way in some cases).

What is the difference between human lungs and animals lungs?

Bird lungs have the same basic features as human lungs, such as a trachea, bronchi, lungs and capillaries etc, however birds' lungs operate in a cycling of air manner rather than a mixing action as in humans. Human lungs move air into alveoli at the extremities of the lungs and because it would require immense force to reopen a completely deflated alveoli and therefore they are never fully emptied and maintain "dead space". This means that when fresh air is moved in, there is mixing of fresh and dead space air. Birds on the other hand have a linear cycling of air meaning that the maximum amount of oxygen can reach the capillaries and pass into the blood stream. Hence bird respiration is more effective than human's, but in a way it needs to be due to the decreased size and intense need for efficiency during flight etc.
