PT Barnum was a great prankster - he was able to pull off his hoaxes, make money, all while convincing his "victims" it was grand entertainment rather than fraud. His most notable work of scheming was a "This Way to Egress" sign. Under the assumption that 'egress' was the name of an exhibit, the individuals followed the sign through the door that led them to...outside. After falling for the prank, the visitors had to re-pay admission.

In 1881, James Anthony Bailey and P.T. Barnum combined forces to found the "Barnum and Bailey Circus."

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus was started when the circus created by James Anthony Bailey and P.T. Barnum was merged with the Ringling Brothers Circus. The Ringling brothers purchased the Barnum & Bailey Circus in 1907, but ran the circuses separately until they were finally merged in 1919.

Oxford dictionary describes sport as

"An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment."

Circus doesn't generally involve competition so by this definition it is not a sport.

However circus performers can be described as athletes -

"A person who is proficient in sports and other forms of physical exercise."

Cirque du Soleil doesn't have and summer camp programs but The National Circus school in montreal (literally across the street from Cirque du Soleil headquarters) does have an overnight summer program.

In 1871 PT Barnum started the "Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan and Hippodrome". In 1881 James Bailey and Branum merged to become "Barnum and Bailey Circus". In 1919 that was merged with the "Ringling Brothers Circus". The film "The Greatest Show on Earth" which featured the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus, was released in 1952.
