How do you clean oil off walls?

There are a number of ways to do this depending upon the size of the stain, as well as the type of wall. If for example the wall is paint on plaster, then an oil based cleaner will work excellently. In lue of a good oil based cleaner, then gasoline will even work. If the wall is made of something like concrete or metal, then shot blasing techniques such as sand blasting may be the best option.

How do you get baked on grease off your stove top without scratching the surface?

Scrape as much off as you can with a single-edge razor blade in a holder. What remains, you polish off with an approved abrasive paste and a rag. Cerabrite is one brand that you can use. Do not use a harsh abrasive because it may scratch the surface.

For glass stove tops (which are also called "hobs"), hardware shops sell a product called "Hob Cleaner Paste".

Put less than a teaspoon sized blob of the paste onto the hob and use a dry paper kitchen towel to spread it out all over the ring area, rubbing just a little. The idea is to let that cleaner paste dry off. Then use the paper kitchen towel to rub the dried cleaner paste into the stains over and over and, hopefully, you may get most of them off.

However you may be unlucky to remove all the stains first time so use the hob cleaner paste several times over several weeks. Even then, some stains may remain forever if they were allowed to get "burnt" into the glass surface..

Some people recommend using a special type of metal handled scraper that is specially made for use on glass stove tops. It has a razor blade mounted on it. You can try using one but you'd have to use it very carefully and be sure not to "cut" or scratch the surface. There is no point in damaging the surface permanently by attacking it too violently with a sharp tool of any type.

In the UK a product called "HOB BRiTE" is what I use and it does a good job at keeping my hob looking showroom new after 10 years.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MAKE SURE YOUR STOVE IS TURNED OFF - VERY IMPORTANT... THEN, COAT YOUR STOVE TOP IN A LAYER OF DAWN DISH DETERGENT AND COVER WITH A PLASTIC TRASH BAG OVERNIGHT NEXT MORNING, USE A SOFT COTTON RAG WET WITH HOT WATER TO CLEAN OFF YOUR STOVE TOP. IT SHOULD REMOVE THE GREASE EASILY.

Another option for people living in North America is a cheap product that works REALLY well for glass stovetops: "WEIMAN" GLASS COOKTOP CLEANER. It can be purchased at WalMart for about $4.00. I swear by it. It doesn't matter what I cook, my glasstop looks new after I clean it. Says it can also be used for glass fireplace doors. To use, you pour it on a cool stove, rub with paper towel or sponge, and wipe off. Voila!

Can limestone clean water?

In terms of annual tonnage, lime ranks first among chemicals used in the treatment of potable and industrial water supplies. Lime is used by many municipalities to improve water quality, especially for water softening and arsenic removal. Indeed, the American Water Works Association has issued standards that provide for the use of lime in drinking water treatment.

In water softening, hydrated lime is used to remove carbonate hardness from the water. Hardness caused by other calcium and magnesium salts, called noncarbonate hardness, is generally treated by means of the lime-soda process, which entails the precipitation of magnesium by lime. The co-produced calcium salt reacts with the soda ash to form a calcium carbonate precipitate. Lime enhanced softening can also be used to remove arsenic from water. Recent changes to the national drinking water standard for arsenic have increased the need for this treatment.

Hydrated lime is widely used to adjust the pH of water to prepare it for further treatment. Lime is also used to combat "red water" by neutralizing the acid water, thereby reducing corrosion of pipes and mains from acid waters. The corrosive waters contain excessive amounts of carbon dioxide. Lime precipitates the CO2 to form calcium carbonate, which provides a protective coating on the inside of water mains.

Lime is used in conjunction with alum or iron salts for coagulating suspended solids incident to the removal of turbidity from "raw" water. It serves to maintain the proper pH for most satisfactory coagulation conditions. In some water treatment plants, alum sludge is treated with lime to facilitate sludge thickening on pressure filters.

By raising the pH of water to 10.5-11 through the addition of lime and retaining the water in contact with lime for 24-72 hours, lime controls the environment required for the growth of bacteria and certain viruses. This application of lime is utilized where "phenolic water" exists, because chlorine treatment tends to produce an unpalatable water due to the phenol present. This process, called "excess alkalinity treatment," also removes most heavy metals.

One of the most common methods of removing silica from water is the use of dolomitic lime. The magnesium component of this lime is the active constituent in silica removal. Lime is also used to remove manganese, fluoride, organic tannins and iron from water supplies.
