A simple way to improve your chances would be to pick up a fertility monitor, which is available at your local pharmacy and will help tell you the days you are ovulating. For most women this is around day 14 (for a 28 day cycle) and 14 days before your period begins for longer/shorter cycles. After that, or if you've been trying for more than 6 months to 1 year you should consult a fertility specialist (special type of doctor). They will test your boyfriend's semen to ensure he has enough sperm and that they are normal. They will then test you to make sure you are ovulating, and that there are no problems with your anatomy or genes that would prevent you from getting pregnant.

It is not NECESSARY to do an ultrasound at all, they have only been done for the last 25 years or so and women were having babies for thousands of years before them. Having said that..... If you are unsure of your dates or you have bleeding you may have an ultrasound for dating and to check you are not miscarrying at 6-7 weeks. There are blood tests done for genetic abnormalities and a test for Downs syndrome where the scan is done at 12-13 weeks. (this would be the 3 month scan) If everything is normal and you are not having these tests most women have a scan at 18-20 weeks as at this stage the baby is fully formed and all its systems can be checked. (This would be the 5 month scan). There are no guarantees that the scan will pick up ALL abnormalities as some just cannot be seen on a scan. You do not have to have a scan at all if you don't want to it is totally up to you if and when you have it.

There is an infection of some kind, probably would have gotten in through a scratch or a thorn in the kitten's leg. If there is so much pus and inflammation that the whole leg is swollen, you need to get the kitten to a vet immediately as an infection this severe is endangering its life. It will need antibiotics, and if the infection is very bad it may even need to stay at the vet's.
