What are the major causes of homelessness?

One Answer:

In the US, the root cause of homelessness is a persons inability to cope with the process involved in maintaining a "normal" lifestyle. These inabilities can stem from mental illness, drug and alcohol addiction, teenaged runaways, and poor education or upbringing. There is also a segment of the homeless population that have experienced severe economic distress. This last group will be able to rebuild a lifestyle more quickly because they have the know how and are usually the most motivated. Teens and people laking education or upbringing can learn the tools necessary to the degree that they are motivated and can find appropriate help. People suffering mental illness or addiction can also overcome their situation with enough motivation but will need the most help.

Answer

Homelessness number 1 cause was the world and poverty. The word homeless means without a permanent shelter.

Previously 100 million were estimated to be homeless but now the number has increased due to the current on going recession as people are unable to afford the inflation prices and therefore mortgages.

So from the begging criminals have lost everything when going inside therefore when leaving the prison people have nothing and start off homelessness and no-one is really going to hire a person with a criminal record but it depends on what this person has done.

Another ANSWER:

The answer is very country dependent. In many countries the answer boils down to one of poverty. The developed world is far different.

Homelessness in developed countries is caused by a lack of social skills in one form or another. This may be from drug use, mental disease or even plain lazy stubborn behavior.

There is more then enough housing and money for every person in every developed country. The work is also available. The issue ends up being one of a individual's desire to fit into the social settings around them. The developed world has even set up a method of obtaining housing and a base lifestyle for those that do not wish to provide a useful output. Welfare provides enough money for these people to obtain good housing and enough food to live better then the base working class.

Another opinion:

Besides cynicism, people become homeless because of home being foreclosed on, loss of jobs, return from military service with no where to go, separation from family members, depression, etc.

Homeless people don't always choose to be homeless. They are all individuals and people as everyone else some may have addictions of sorts that landed them where they are, they may have mental disorders, they may just not want to live in a governed world and choose where they are, some may have gone through a terrible divorce and their spouse took everything, there are a variety of reasons and personal but always remember they are people too. To help these people don't call them names but give them some money even some coppers will help.

Commentary on the above:

People make mistakes, that much is true. Giving them money to continue addictions and poor choices that led to these mistakes is almost never the answer. Homelessness is a series of poor choices and the solution is not allowing and enabling these poor choices to continue. What needs to be done is to first divide these people into two groups.

Some, many actually, wish to be homeless and find this to be a freeing feeling. While normal society doesn't understand this, it still remains factual. These people can not be helped as they do not wish to be helped and find the situation to be livable.

The second group are those that are not homeless voluntarily. They have failed to manage money and were kicked out of the public housing systems the social programs that provide housing for those that have these issues. These people need to be shown what they did wrong. If they have mental issues, they need to be hospitalized. If they have decided to use drugs, they should in place in prison until they have cleaned up their act to become a workable portion of society again.

This group needs to be taught, for whatever reason, to be a functional member of their society that is capable of managing their lives. Most situations listed do not cause homelessness. Divorce, Military service and similar are not substantial portions of the homeless issue. These are cop outs that try to make the situation seem more mainstream.

When dealing with the issue of homelessness, go and meet several of them in homeless magnet areas. You will that the homeless person in the United States is their because they do not wish to be a productive member of society so much that they are willing to lose their homes.

Another big false issue is that criminals are homeless when they leave prison. This is why they are placed in half way homes until they get their act together. They also make income while in prison, so they need not be broke when they leave.

We have systems and programs in place that make homelessness almost impossible compared to any other time in America. It is hard to become homeless and takes a degree of effort to remain that way.

When did homeless vets start?

Before the 1960s, a "homeless" person was usually someone who lived in a cheap motel or a run down room. The "modern homelessness" epidemic in which homeless people often sleep on the streets probably began around the late 1960s during the rise of addictions to hard drugs. Crystal meth, crack cocaine and heroin are a powerful factor in modern day homelessness. Many homeless people are homeless because of hard drugs. Many (but not all) drug addicts choose to live a "homeless" lifestyle, which tends to stigmatize low income families. Largely because of hard drugs and the "choosing" of the homeless lifestyle, homelessness has become somewhat "normalized" over the years, which can result in communities having low standards for housing the poor.
