There is much symbolism in The Polar Express. As a minor example, the fact that the pin that holds a lever together (in the engine room in the train) is gold symbolizes its importance (it could have been silver or another color). Other examples: The boy and Santa represent the true spirit of Christmas. And the "hobo-looking" ghost represents the ba-humbug in all of us: that we will usually believe only what we can physically see.

For the same reason's other people are homeless. The rule is this: if a person has a specific personality before that individual went into the service...that person may still have that personality when the individual leaves the service; but that personality be expand or regress...based upon the life experiences of that particular individual.
Only a truly "shell-shocked" man, who was perfectly normal before he went in (to the service), may be mentally influenced after the war...to become homeless. And in such an event, the VA is there to help him. During the Vietnam "era" it WAS the Veteran's Administration Hospital's policy to NEVER turn down a veteran.

That is not true. I know someone who is homeless because he fell on hard times, he still has a steady income and his ex wants to take him to court to get money he owed, she even has a contract that he signed but she is wondering if it will matter that he doesnt have a current address? Would email be sufficient? What if they have their last address where they rarely pick up mail at? Some homeless people have storages with assets and money. Just f.y.i contributor.

What type of people become homeless?
They lose their jobs. They become "downsized". Or they got a house (condo, apartment) that cost more money than they could afford. They might have invested in a house, thinking that the value of a house would Always go up, and it didn't. Most people probably become homeless because the economy turns bad and they suffer the consequences. They do the best they can, try and live within their means, and they suffer in a bad economic climate.
Homeless people can be kicked out of their apartment or house by not having the money to pay the bills; were kicked out due to a divorce, argument or other such conflict; or actually want to not have a home (for example, George Orwell spent a year dirt-poor on purpose).

Why you should treat the homeless better?
The obvious reason would be that they are people too, and not on the same level as the rats that might inhabit the neighboring boxes. The other reason would be that anyone could end up like that, if your stocks go horribly wrong (another stock market crash), or anything else that could land you in a back alley tommorrow. If you believe the Bible, which I do, Jesus told His followers that how you treat the poor is how you really think of and treat Christ Himself, as how you treat the homeless is a true reflection of who you are, not just who you think you are, or who you appear to be to other people. Homeless people are people just like you and me and the fact of the matter is they may have had lives at one time as others but ended up where they are through a variety of very unfortunate circumstances. I realize that some are on the streets due to rebellion and lack of respect for authority and/or have addiction problems but that does not mean they were not ever a respected part of society at one time.
The following book would be of interest to anyone that has questions such as this: Tim Huff "The Cardboard Shack Beneath the Bridge". (see related link)
Do people reject the homeless?
Being around the homeless makes many people very uncomfortable in the same way that a person with Down Syndrom or cerebal palsy. People see the homeless as dirty degenerates. What are the causes of homelessness for teens?
I assume we are talking about industrialized nations here. No expert on this field, but I would assume the number one cause would be running away from home. I would also assume this is the number one cause of teenager prostitution also.
Second would probably be parents that could not or would not provide enough support to maintain a home. Which goes back to social interaction deficits that the parents have, for whatever reason (ie Drugs, mental capacity , willingness to work, inability to adapt to changing environment)
Where can you find housing for the homeless?
In the winter, you can find them on top of sewer grates in the morning. They enjoy the warmth that comes from all the water that we use and put into our drains.
