Pain

Physical pain is a part of life. We all experience it, whether a scrape on the knee or a broken bone, receptors in our bodies sent pain signals all the way from our extremities to our brains. Here you might ask and answer questions about unexplained pain, what it could mean, and what to do about it.

Had an MRI and it showed nothing wrong but your wrist still has frequent pain what should you do?

MRI's are not the final say in any diagnosis by far. It depends on when the MRI was taken as well. As in a plain film X-ray, swelling can mask problems you might have.

Pain is an indication of something wrong, either in what you're doing on a regular basis (ergonomic stress), an injury, or disease (arthritis, etc.).

However, just because you have pain in one area does not necessarily mean that the problem originates there. It is very common, especially with nerve-related pain, to have damage in another area of the body and feel the pain in another. For example, pain in the left arm, wrist, and fingers can be related to a cervical (neck) nerve being pinched by a damaged or stressed cervical disk. In fact, the pain can be quite extreme. Few people realize that the nerves in their arms and hands are actually controlled from the cervical spine.

You need to first try to identify any possible causes for the pain. Ergonomic stress is the most common today as virtually most people use a keyboard. Sitting an inch or two higher or lower can put stress on the wrist area. Prior or recent whiplash injuries or a "burner" (pinched nerve in the shoulder or neck) can indicate a possible cervical disk problem. If you've had an injury in another area, check the associated nerve pathway to see if it's connected to your wrist. Cervical disk nerve problems can be felt on the outside of the wrist (palm down) or inside when the palm is up.

The type of pain is also important, as is whether or not there's any pain in other areas, such as your shoulder, hand, fingers, elbow, etc. Nerve pain is very sharp and stabbing. Muscle/ligament pain tends to be dull, aching, and sometimes burning.

Keep a Pain Diary, noting when your pain occurs, or if it's constant, when it's worse, and if it increases over time. Keep track of what you were doing prior to any increase in pain. Over time you'll get a better idea of what's causing it, unless you can trace it to a known problem.

What is palpertations on left side of chest?

"palpitations" are any feeling (as in to palpate) , or anything you can feel. in this case if you are having fluttering feelings in your chest... it could be atrial fibrillation or any number of other heart arrhythmias or it could be nothing. Get it checked out by a Dr. if it occurs every day it will be easy to capture on an overnight heart monitor... if it only happens every few days etc, a 30 day event monitor would be more appropriate.

Is it normal for a tetanus shot to cause an arm to get kind of swollen and have red discoloration I got one a few days ago my arm is killing me and have a few days till I see a doctor again?

Yes, as long as it is small and local just to a small area at the injection site. If it has spread more than an inch or 2 beyond, call the doctor as you may have had a bad reaction. Many people get a mild reaction that results in swelling, discoloration, and even a "lump" that can last for weeks and this is not unusual.

How is pain in your toe perceived by sensory receptors why is it important for your body to sense this pain?

Pain in the toe is perceived by nerves that run from the toe to the brain. The brain then tells the person he is in pain. It is important for the body to sense pain or else he would not know that something is wrong.

How much does a shot or a vaccination hurt on the arm- compare the pain to something like a bug bite or a gun shot?

On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the worst pain ever, it is probably almost always less than 1. I would liken it to a prick from a thorn or splinter, or more than a bug bite but less than a bee sting or similar to poking yourself with a sewing needle or straight pin by accident.

It can vary depending on what medicine is in the shot, some medicines sting or burn as they are going in (it helps if they are injected slowly). Thick medicines also hurt more and slow injection also helps prevent that. But these two circumstances still would be less than 1 on the pain scale in most cases.

If the medicine is not an irritant to tissue and if the injection is done correctly, you may not even feel it. If you feel it, it lasts only a second or two just as the needle goes in. Count, "1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi, ... " and see how fast it goes.

Influenza vaccinations, for example, are given in small quantities and the needles used are not very big when injecting into the muscle as most flu shots are. There are even smaller (90% smaller) needles used when you get the newest intradermal vaccines. They go into the layers of the skin, not as deep as muscle or subcutaneous injections. They are good for those with needle phobias and, these almost never hurt.

Sometimes some people will get a sore arm the next day from vaccinations. It can feel like a strained muscle and might be very sore to the touch, have reddish skin and be slightly swollen. This is a normal reaction to the immune response that the vaccine is causing, and it is noticed more at the local site of the injection at first. It should go away in a matter of days and the more you use your arm, the faster that will improve.

Shots in the arm are really usually no big deal.

What causes lower back pains dizziness and weak?

It depends on if the back pain and the other symptoms are related.

A "pinched nerve" would cause all of those.

There are various ways to determine if they are isolated or acting in relation to each other, there are also ways of diffusing each one, separately or together.

Dizziness when of spinal origin, is usually higher in the spine that lower.

Weakness can come anything nerve conduction is impeded/pinched.

Things like your age, your history, any injuries and body type are all important factors,

none of which I could know from just your question.

Hope this helps. Good Luck.

What if you fall on your knee and it doesn't hurt to walk on it but it hurts to touch it?

Lower left back pain and left knee pain?

Some people think that just like other problems, one should also rest or lie down if he is suffering from back pain. In reality, one should move the pain area as much as possible. Moving the pain area helps in getting rid of this problem but it also does not mean to move it for a long period of time. Neither too much rest, nor too much movement is good for lower back pain, left side.

Pain and sweating on whole left side of body and docs can't figure it out please help. also legs and arms twitch by themselves. Can you figure it out?

The only disk that would affect that wide an area and cause the kind of problem you're seeing is a disk herniation or other problem at the C1/C2 disk. It's the only disk that radiates to the entire side of the body. Sweating is normal when sharp pain is present for extended periods.

Think back the last few months - were you in an accident with whiplash injury, hit your head, anything that might cause a neck injury that might have not looked or felt serious?

If not that, then your symptoms also resemble Peripheral Neuropathy. There's too much to write about it here, but I've added a link to a site that will give you more information. At the very least you should be dealing with a Neurologist.

Remember that if you can't get a doctor who can give you a diagnosis, keep looking. Contrary to what we are raised to believe, they are not all knowing - they're just like Barbers. They provide a service. When you get a bad haircut, do you keep going back? Of course not.
