Not junk. They're a good student sax, but vary depending on their age. the Aristocrat line was introduced by Buescher in the 1930's as a professional instrument. By the time Selmer bought Buescher in 1963, designs had advanced and the 'crats were considered intermediate instruments. Selmer continued to use the Buescher tooling for some time but hasn't for some decades. More recent instruments are made in Taiwan, and I don't know whether they have anything in common with the old 'crats, but they are still considered good student saxes.

The clarinet has a much larger range than the saxophone - over three full octaves in the useable range, not including the upper altissimo. That normal range is from written E, an octave below the treble staff, to G an octave above the treble staff. The most common clarinet is the Bb soprano, and the range sounds from concert D in the middle of the bass clef to concert F, an octave above the treble staff.

The alto sax is in Eb with a written range from Bb just below middle C to F or F#, an octave above the treble staff. The range sounds from Db in the middle of the bass clef (one half tone lower than the lowest clarinet note), to Ab or A, one ledger line above the treble staff. That's six notes of the scale below the top of the normal clarinet range.

The same written note sounds a fifth (five scale notes, inclusive) lower on the alto sax. For example, a written middle C sounds a concert Bb on the clarinet and the next lower concert Eb on the alto sax.

Andy Hamilton played the saxophone in the studio recording (and on tour), but in the video, filmed in Antigua, it is bassist John Taylor miming playing the sax on top of the cliff, and keyboardist Nick Rhodes doing the same (while nearly losing his balance) on a raft in the shallow waters off Shirley Heights.

LeComte produced SaxHorns under license to Adolf Sax beginning in 1860 (probably beginning with serial number 1000)

Sax's saxophone patents ran out in 1866. LeComte probably began production of a line of alto saxes in late 1866 or early 1867 with serial numbers intermixed with the SaxHorns beginning around 1700. This model has dual octave keys and only plays down to low "B".

It is nearly identical to the Sax alto saxophone of the period, with the exception of the post arrangements and a few key arms modified as a result. LeComte introduced posts mounted on left and right hand ribs -- probably to speed production times. Adolph Sax altos have posts mounted on the body, frequently attached with rivets through the body. Most of the keys, ferrules, key guards, tone holes, and posts appear to be identical to Sax's. Even the hand engraving appears to have been done by the same person.

This model was produced through 1888 (serial numbers around 8000) when LeComte introduced the single octave key mechanism and the right hand spatula keys with rollers. This improved model was continued by Cousnon.

It's actually made in China. I bought one (a curved soptano) in Beijing last year. Good instrument, good intonation, with clean tone. The shop owner told me that it is made in Shanghai.
