The Viceroyalty of New Spain (Spanish: Virreinato de Nueva España) was the first of four viceroyalties created to govern Spain's territories in North and Central America. It was ruled by a viceroy from Mexico Citywho governed many territories on behalf of the King of Spain. The Viceroyalty of New Spain lasted from 1535 to 1821, and was one of two early viceroyalties established in the 16th century, the other being the Viceroyalty of Peru. In the 18th century the Viceroyalty of Nueva Granada, and the Viceroyalty of the Rio de la Plata were also created. The territories that the Viceroyalty of New Spain ruled included present-dayCalifornia (Las Californias), Nueva Extremadura (present day Coahuila andTexas), Southwestern United States(Santa Fe de Nuevo México),Mexico, Central America (exceptPanama), Florida (La Florida) and the Caribbean. Jurisdiction also extended to the Spanish East Indies.

The Spanish brought their religion, written language, books, music and art, food and customs to the new world. They also brought technology and an awareness of the rest of the world. On the other hand they also brought slavery, disease and domination.

First, the common traits. Mexico and Spain have a large, common history since Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes discovered Mexico in 1518 and conquered the Aztec Empire at the Fall of Tenochtitlan in 1521. Since then, Mexico became a colony of Spain until the 19th century, when the Mexican War of Independence (1810-1821) came to an end. Due to Spain's colonization efforts, Mexico adopted many Spanish traditions such as language (Spanish, spoken by 93% of Mexican population) and religion (Roman Catholicism, professed by 88% of Mexico's population).

Now, on the differences. Mexico is a Latin American nation while Spain is a European country. The ethnic make up of Mexico is predominantly of mestizo (60%) and Amerindian people (30%) while Spaniards are a mixture of Mediterranean and Nordic types. Mexico is a federal presidential republic of 31 independent states and one federal district while Spain has a constitutional monarchy with 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities. Finally, Spain is regarded as an industrialized country, ranking as the 16th largest economy in the world, while Mexico is an emerging market which ranks as the 11th largest economy.
