Addictions

Addiction is a dependence on a behavior or substance that a person is generally powerless to stop, and will increase in severity over time unless it is treated. Medically, it is the compulsive physiological and psychological need for a habit-forming substance. Questions related to substance abuse and dependency on nicotine, illegal drugs and alcohol, as well as other addictive substances, are asked and answered in this category.

I left him for being a narcissist and a drug addict will he treat the new girlfriend who has got herself pregnant any better?

Many believe addiction is a disease (not a choice) that causes complete narcissism. The need for the chemical essentially "takes over" the brain of the addict and the only thing that matters is getting and taking the drug.

This may be difficult but consider yourself lucky to be out of the situation and try not to focus on what your former boyfriend is doing and try to learn how to make yourself happy without him.

Whether or not his new girlfriend will get better treatment depends on whether or not he stays addicted. If he stays addicted nothing is likely to change.

What is physiological addiction?

When your brain feels it need the drug to keep going. This is probably the biggest part of an addiction.

Actually the physiological aspects of addiction are twofold. There is the initial physical need for the substance which will cause you to feel withdrawal symptoms such as:

Alocohol: shaking hands, nausea, headache, thirst, dizziness (basic hangover stuff) or hallucinations and seizures in those severely addicted (aka The DT's).

Opiates: Heroin, Oxies, etc. Nausea. cramping, sweats, itching, etc.

Then there are also the secondary symptoms that have to do with the brain chemistry trying to right itself after prolonged use. There will be mood swings, anxiety, irritability, depression, mania, etc. depending on the substance. Because people who are addicted can actually permanently change their brain chemistry after long term use of a drug these symptoms may never go away which is why anti-depressants and mood stabilizers (which are non-narcotic, non-addictive and don't get you high) are very useful for addicts trying to stay sober. This is also why studies have reported that up to 70% of those with an addiction have some form of mental disorder such as depression. Weather the mental disorder came first or the addiction is still being debated.

You've been on Suboxone for 2 months 8 mgs a day how long must you wait before you can smoke OXY and feel something?

First off, not trying to judge cuz i have been here as well man, but if you are on subox it is becuz you have had a problem w either oxy's or herion.... Be careful. Suboxone has a very long halflife in your system, this is what makes it so effective. When I was heavy in addiction/prescribed suboxone I would usually wait 24-48 hours, obviously the longer you wait the more likely u are to get twisted. I say be careful becuz a lot of people do oxy while the suboxone is still highly active which blocks opiates from being effective, usually causing us addicts to do more in hopes of nodding out, this causes many people to overdose. The opiate receptors are blocked but this does not in any way mean you cannot over dose. Again be safe, goodm luck!

You have been taking 12.5 mg of ambien cr dor several years now on a daily basis you have tried to ween yourself down and have been splitting the pills now you hear that you should not be doing thisPl?

The reason they say not to split Ambien CR (CR stands for Controlled Release) pills is that the coating is part of the timed dosage CR is supposed to deliver. In splitting them you can get hit all of a sudden with all 12.5mg, or not get much at all until later. If you're trying to ween down, get your doc to switch your prescription to Ambien 10mg (standard -- not CR). THose, you can split to your heart's content. The coating on them is only an enteric coating to avoid roughing up your tummy.

Can you take an opiate the same day as a single 8mg suboxone?

Yes, and no. The suboxone will block most opiates, especially if you've been on it a while. 8mg's of suboxone has a good bit of naltrxone in it, that's the blocker. Oxicodone of any sort will not work, unless you use HUGE amounts. Complete waste, will get you angry big time, Heroin will work after a bout 6 hours, but again a large dose is needed, dangerous!!! Fentanyl will work.....sort of depends on what you are looking for, euphoria, or pain reduction. Suboxone will work for addiction problems, that is it works VERY well for most given a thorough chance! You can even do very well after a month or so on less than 4mg's. The problem I've encountered is the naltrexone is toxic, and had made me sick after 3 years of suboxone use. Now I'm really stuck, sick from it, sick w/o it. Going to try and do a small amount of methadone instead for a few weeks, then try and go back on to a small dose of sub. This is a lot more than you wanted to know, but let me say the suboxone has kept me alive for 3 years that I never have had without it..... so not a bad deal, give it a REAL chance!! Couple weeks at most, you be just fine and happy!

What are effects of drug addiction to their studies?

People who are addicted to drugs (with the exception, in some cases, of early amphetamine addiction) tend to focus on drugs, obtaining drugs, and the effects of drugs. This rarely engenders good study habits and high-level scholarship.

They become more concerned on when they can get their next fix. They lose all motovation for anything else. It's a habit most people can't shake even when they want to.

Why would LSD make you stare at the sun?

When you are tripping you may feel a stronger sense of connection/meaning in the elements around you, and you may come to the realization that the sun is the source of life energy for the earth. Individuals, usually male, will focus on the sun to receive its energy in an attempt to speak to/absorb it. Sometimes staring at the sun just makes the visuals better, and leave residual color spots in your vision. To glance at the sun briefly can certainly enliven the spirit when on LSD, but the sense of invincibility that sometimes accompanies LSD trips may cause you to stare at the Sun long enough to cause damage, without even being aware of it because your visual cortex is already highly stimulated.

Is a hot shower a good cure for a hangover?

Though taking a hot shower may help relax you, or a cold shower to wake you up, there aren't actually any definitive studies that prove showers will "cure" your hangover. Then again, some people truly swear by it... so to each, their own!
