What causes your fingers to swell?

Q: Why do your fingers/hands and toes/feet itch and swell in the cold?

A: The second law of thermodynamics states that heat flows naturally from an object at a higher temperature to an object at a lower temperature, and heat doesn't flow in the opposite direction of its own accord. With respect to your fingers/hands and toes/feet, when they are out in reasonably to extremely cold temperatures, the heat from them flows rapidly to the air. How fast they lose heat depends on the temperature of the cold fluid. Fluid being liquid or gaseous (air). The difference in the fluid temperature and your body temperature determines the driving force or how fast the heat leaves through your extremities. When this process occurs, the body automatically begins to pump blood at a faster rate per the heat being loss (change in blood pressure). This process increases the blood pressure rapidly to the extremities and causes them to swell and hurt.

Is there a common disease or known allergen that results in the quick formation of small itchy non pus forming bumps?

Nettles is a possibility.

Sounds like hives. Could be anything from grass to dogs to wheat. You might want to consult an allergist. They can do a multiple allergy test which consists of pricking the skin on the forearm in rows, maybe 3 or 4 rows, a total of 12 or 16 dots, then dabbing allergens one on each dot. It doesn't hurt. Really. It's not an injection so a needle doesn't go into your arm. It's just a pinprick. Then you wait an hour or so to see what dots get raised red bumps. That's what you're allergic to. Another option is waiting until it happens again to see if you can identify the source yourself. Good luck.

What to take for food allergic reaction?

You should take an antihistamine (loratadine, cetirizine, diphenhydramine) right away. If the reaction is severe you may need an epinephrine injector (EpiPen, Twinject, ). Seek emergency help even though the epinephrine helps. I will wear off in 30-60 minutes.

The cure for a food allergy is to find out what foods you are allergic to, and stop eating them. Sometimes if you stop eating an allergic food for 2 or 3 weeks, you can start eating small amounts of it again without a reaction. You should never do this if the reaction is severe and you should seek the help of a Medical Allergist and not a surgeon Allergist(ENT). They only deal with minor allergies of the nose.

Why does pollen cause allergies?

As a type of dust it is easy to inhale. You can be allergic to many types of dust partials. What happens is your body thinks an allergen is harmful and your immune system attacks it. The production of mucus in the throat and nose is the bodies way of trying isolate and get rid of a perceived threat and tries to wash it away. An allergy is a case where the body is overreacting to things that aren't really that harmful.

Allergies can come and go and no one is quite sure why some people's immune systems overreact to certain things. Something is clearly wrong with the body if a person has many extreme allergies. Exposure to toxins I believe can trigger some types of allergies and our world is now full of toxins especially in industrial areas.
