Normally, Ham Radio is used to describe amateur, 2 way radio where 2 individuals talk to each other back and forth; on the other hand, shortwave radio generally is used to describe commercial High Frequency radio broadcasting. This band is a commercial service that provides long range (worldwide) audiences for broadcasts but is a 1 way media. Think about a local FM radio show that you could listen to anywhere in the world but you can not talk back to them.

You may have a Ham radio antenna anywhere in the US, unless there are restrictions as to its placement, such as in a condo or apartment.

If you meant a Ham radio transmitter, then you must have a Ham license to operate it.

It's just what it sounds like--a license that restricts your privileges. Most of the people who have these are pilots or mariners. If you're a pilot who has a restricted license, you can use an aviation radio only if it's in an airplane. His system changes the keys around so that the vowels and very common consonants can be typed with your two index fingers. A radio repeater works by having the transmitter and receiver on separate frequencies. This allows the transmitter to re-transmit the received audio or data. To prevent the transmitter from opening due to noise on the receiver most systems will only re-transmit if they receive a keying tone at the start of the transmission, a sub audible tone which is transmitted with the normal modulation or a digital code. Some repeaters use a separate antenna for transmit and receive although most use a single antenna and a filtering arrangement to split the transmit and receive frequencies. This filter is called a duplexer as it permits duplex operation.

I easily transmit more than 10 miles from a hill top with 5 watts and a pair of

rabbit ears as an antenna measured for the right frequency. Signal is Clear and

definitely usable.

Of course, I can't tell you who I am or where I live, since doing that on standard

FM is totally illegal without a license, and the FCC can fine me or imprison me if

they catch me at it.

But my rig sure gets out great with those rabbit ears !
