Radio is useful for the older generation, if somebody is unable to see/watch the television radio is the next best thing!
Is ham radio and shortwave the same?
Not necessarily. Normally, Ham Radio is used to describe amateur, 2 way radio where 2 individuals talk to each other back and forth; on the other hand, shortwave radio generally is used to describe commercial High Frequency radio broadcasting. This band is a commercial service that provides long range (worldwide) audiences for broadcasts but is a 1 way media. Think about a local FM radio show that you could listen to anywhere in the world but you can not talk back to them.

-- If the walkie talkie is designed to operate on more than one channel, then
there's a switch on it that selects the channel.
-- If it's not designed to operate on more than one channel, then you have to
get inside, change some crystals, and maybe optimize some resonant circuits.
Of course, after you've done that, it's illegal to use it.

In Radio Terms What is a Restricted license?
It's just what it sounds like--a license that restricts your privileges. Most of the people who have these are pilots or mariners. If you're a pilot who has a restricted license, you can use an aviation radio only if it's in an airplane. You can't put an aviation radio in your car, or in your house, or walk around with it and talk on it. Same deal with marine radios--you can use a marine radio in a boat but not on shore. Yes, there are handheld aviation and marine radios.
The tradeoff: they are good for life.
Can a kraco kcb 4004 am cb be convert into FM?
Sure it can. But one of the conditions that go along with the privilege of operating
license-free on CB is that the equipment is used in its type-accepted, unmodified
form, and that as soon as you open it up and make changes on it, you're guilty of
a federal crime. Get a ham license instead, and then you can do anything you want
to your equipment, even build it yourself from the ground up if you want to.
What is meant by a Dvorak keyboard and how are they used in Ham Radio?
The Dvorak keyboard has nothing to do with Amateur Radio, other than some Hams prefer to use it.
John Dvorak, a number of years ago, set out to create a more logical keyboard than what we have inherited from typewriters. His system changes the keys around so that the vowels and very common consonants can be typed with your two index fingers. The slightly less common consonants are typed by the middle finger, and so on. The result is that somewhere around 90% of you keystrokes can be done by just the index and middle fingers. The Dvorak keyboard is much easier for a beginner to learn than the QWERTY keyboard.
At the resonant frequency, the speaker efficiency is greater so the sound will be louder. For voice radio, a resonance near 2500 Hz might improve intelligibility. For music radio, a resonance at about 200 Hz will enhance the perceived bass from the radio. For high fidelity sound, a flat response from 20 Hz to 20000 Hz is needed. In practice only the highest quality kit comes close to this. Mostly resonance causes unpleasant colouration of the sound. You can learn a lot by playing with the graphic equaliser that ships with many computer sound cards and products like iTunes. Turn up the volume on different frequencies to see what it sounds like.
Occasionally you will see a capacitor marked with a circled number 2 What does this marking mean?
a 2 with a circle around it,is the marking for sprague. If you have this, you have a sprague capacitor.
How do you change a 1 amp meter to read 500 ma full scale?
You must slightly increase the resistance of the internal shunt.
-- The exact amount depends on the characteristics of the meter movement
without the shunt.
-- The process will involve something like filing small notches in the existing shunt
until the meter's full-scale has changed to what you want.
-- But that plan raises the whole new issue of how you'll measure the changes
while you're filing.
Judging by the fact that you asked the question, my opinion is that you'll find it
faster, easier, and more effective to simply buy a new 500 mA meter, rather than
run the risk of ruining the perfectly good 1 Amp meter that you have now.
How many ham radio operators are there in Spain?
According to the URE, there are 12,000 members. Of course, I don't know how long ago that count was made, but there are a TON of them. I have been a ham for 33 years and when we have operating contests, they come out of the woodwork!
John E. Gercken, AA9UF
A radio repeater works by having the transmitter and receiver on separate frequencies. This allows the transmitter to re-transmit the received audio or data. To prevent the transmitter from opening due to noise on the receiver most systems will only re-transmit if they receive a keying tone at the start of the transmission, a sub audible tone which is transmitted with the normal modulation or a digital code. Some repeaters use a separate antenna for transmit and receive although most use a single antenna and a filtering arrangement to split the transmit and receive frequencies. This filter is called a duplexer as it permits duplex operation.

Is there any danger for other people living next to Amateur Radio Antennas?
The FCC requires that amateur radio operators running above a certain power on a specific band site analysis in order to determine if RF fields are below a specific limit where people are. If the RF fields are above the limit, the operator must reduce the power until the the fields are at a safe limit.

Can you use a tv rabbit ears antenna to transmit on standard FM?
I easily transmit more than 10 miles from a hill top with 5 watts and a pair of
rabbit ears as an antenna measured for the right frequency. Signal is Clear and
definitely usable.
Of course, I can't tell you who I am or where I live, since doing that on standard
FM is totally illegal without a license, and the FCC can fine me or imprison me if
they catch me at it.
But my rig sure gets out great with those rabbit ears !
