Animal Parasites

Animal parasites refer to the common parasites that afflict animals, such as worms, ticks, mites, lice, and fleas. Animal parasites come in two varieties, external and internal, and can be very troublesome for the animal, sometimes leading to severe illness or death. There are often treatment options for these parasites, but the best way avoid exposure is for animals to receive regular veterinary care.

What do you do if the head of a tick is still in dog?

The tick head is a foreign object that the body reacts to the way it would to splinter: redness and swelling, infection, sometimes the presence of pus. This is a process that will eventually--in most cases--force the object out. This process can be aided by digging the tick head out with a flame-sterilized needle and/or trying to grab it with tweezers.

What medicine do rabbits get when they have worms?

You shouldn't give any medicine to your rabbit without the direction of a vet.

Rabbits usually don't need vitamins or nutritional supplements because a healthy balanced diet takes care of all of that. (See the related question below for more info about the rabbit diet.)

If your rabbit is sick, you need to see a special "rabbit savvy" vet who can tell you which medicines to use. Many medicines that are safe for human babies, cats, and dogs are deadly for rabbits. (See the related question below for more info about rabbit vets.)

Experienced rabbit owners may be able to give some medications to their rabbits at home, as first aid:

For bunnies suffering from gas, a dose or two of simethicone (in liquid suspension -- often available in the baby aisle) often does the trick. If the gas doesn't go away, bring the rabbit to a vet because gan can turn into serious illness in rabbits. The commonly cited dose of simethicone for a rabbit is 20-40mg (you'll have to read your bottle to find out how many mg per ml is in your suspension; also note that 1cc is the same as 1ml; so, 1cc of a 20mg/ml suspension includes 20mg of simethicone drug). Also give the bunny belly massage and encourage exercise to work the gas through the system.

How long do flea collars last?

Flea collars are not a good idea, and can actually be quite toxic to the animal. There is no way you can tell how much of the chemical is going on the animal's skin (if any) and over how long a period. Thus, you can't really tell when they aren't working. Another problem with these collars are that the chemicals in the collar will kill adult fleas ONLY, and not the larvae. A proper product given by your veterinarian is the best solution for flea treatment.

There likely will be no problem if the amount of canine flea medicine ingested was within the dosage range for a dog similar in size to the cat, but take the cat to a veterinarian if it swallowed a much larger amount of the medicine or if it appears to be sick. Bring the container of medicine along with its instructions with you if you do go to a veterinarian.

What are the white worms coming from your butt and how do you get rid of them?

Not unless you are infested with them... it's not healthy to have worms living in you.

The most common worm to live inside a human is the Threadworm (or Pinworm).

Threadworms are tiny little white worms, about 3cm long. The female worms lay their eggs in your gut which go down to the rectum (butt). These eggs are coated in a sticky white substance which causes the butt to get itchy, or tickly when the worms move. If you're a girl, then the female may move forwards and lay her eggs in your vagina.

In the UK, these worms are more likely to be on kids. When you itch your butt, sometimes people won't wash their hands and the next time you put your fingers in your mouth is when the worms under your nails will travel down your throat to your gut once again. This is a lifecycle.

Consult your doctor if you think you have worms. He'll give you a tablet which starves the worms to death.

How do you remove ear mites from a dog?

Your vetrinarian can provide you with a lotion that can be swabbed into the ears that will kill the mite infestation. Daily treatments will clear up the problme in about a week or two.

Or if you prefer a natural way of ridding your dog of ear mites, you can use olive oil in the ears to suffocate the mites. This will take persistance and at least a week of treatment.

How long does it take for your kittens to not be contagious once treatment for worms has started?

I will assume this is in reference to a canine. Generally, depending on type of worm, a day or two is usually the length of period the dog stays lethargic and should be left to rest. During this time the worms are being murdered and are or will be leaving the host's body either through regurgitation or excrement. This does not apply toward heartworms and the vet will consult you on their behavior when receiving this treatment.
