White rule in South Africa existed long before the official policy of apartheid, with the civil freedom (including the ability to vote) of the African and Indian population being restricted.

The system of apartheid (roughly translated as "separateness") was introduced following the election victory in 1948 of the Reformed National Party led by Dr Daniel Francois Malan. Apartheid legislation enforced segregation between the races.

How did apartheid affect people living in South Africa?

It meant that black people were unable to live any sort of reasoned life. All natural civil rights were taken away from them. They were segregated in education, when using public services and not even allowed to live in "White South Africa".

They were treated inhumanely and considered to be filth and filth.

The prime purpose for their education was to train them to be black labourers as it was considered all they were good for.

It still affects people today and all the other days.

Why did Malcolm X say 'Black is beautiful'?

Malcolm X did NOT first say the famous quote, "Black is Beautiful".

The phrase "Black is Beautiful" first came from the 1960s writings of Steve

Biko, of South Africa, who was part of the "Black Consciousness Movement". In his book, 'I Write What I Like', Mr. Biko explained the meaning behind his slogan as this: "man, you are okay as you are, begin to look upon yourself as a human being."

The politics of the Black Panthers and the sermons of Malcolm X made the expression more widely known in the USA, and most people wrongly attribute the quote to Malcolm X.

"Black is Beautiful" was a rallying cry, a movement against the idea that Blacks have less attractive or desirable characteristics and to discourage changing the natural African features. The slogan intended to discourage people from feeling they needed to change by:

  • bleaching/whitening their skin
  • straightening their hair
  • having plastic surgery to make a narrower nose

The slogan was meant to create self pride and pride within the race,

so people (especially girls and women) did not continue to feel they needed to alter their physical being just to fit in. They called this an internalized racism that Blacks carried inside and needed to end.

How many black activist deaths were in police custody during south African apartheid?

the official number from the TRC ( Truth and reconciliation commitee) is 7000.

That is 7000 blacks were killed between 1942 and 1994.

In stark contrast : nearly 100000 whites have been killed since 1994.

How did white south africans control black south africans during apartheid?

By the use of guns and brute force.

The above answer is simplistic and one sided. Apartheid was a political and social system that control the whole aspect of life in South Africa. Laws made it difficult if not impossible for blacks to move freely thereby dooming them to a tribal life with few opportunities to excel in life. Migrant worker policies destroyed the fabric of family life in black families. Group Areas Act made it impossible for blacks to live where they choose. A schooling system designed to keep students ignorant and virtually uneducated. The list goes on and on but the point is that force was but one strategy used by the Apartheid regime.

Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Govan Mbeki, Ahmed Kathrada, Raymod Mhlaba, Elias Motsoaledi, Andrew Mlangeni (convicted in Rivonia Trial) These are just a few of the many anti-apartheid leaders (labeled 'communists' by the South African govt.)

Since Nelson Mandela suffered under apartheid in South Africa and was wrongfully imprisoned in South Africa why is his statue in England?

The headquarters of the ANC were based in England as the party had been banned in South Africa. Many marches and protests, demanding the release of Nelson Mandela, were also held in England.

Also, Nelson Mandela was a terrorist, and created/organised many bombing raids against innocent white civilians, which is why he was imprisoned. He only later turned to a more peaceful tactic to fighting apartheid.

Did Nelson Mandela support apartheid or he want it to end?

MANY people contributed in the struggle for freedom, most notably:

The African National Congress (ANC), and their leaders like Nelson Mandela.

The United Nations and countries in general - placing strict sanctions on South Africa, making it almost impossible for them to export or import. This affected the economy badly, putting pressure on the government to get rid of the racial-segregation laws in the country. In addition, politicians in government like Helen Suzman, and others like Desmond Tutu fought against Apartheid.

What was wrong with apartheid?

Everything. The indigenes were highly mistreated. For more information, read books from people like Alex la Guma.

Apartheid, it seems to me, depended on a belief that there is a distinct difference in the quality of any given person which is dependant on their race or ethnicity. This is the belief that makes people Racist. Most people will accept, except racists of course, that racism is inherently both wrong & fallacious.

The above are very answers are bias. Basically apartheid was just about separating ethnic groups and therefore helping them develop separatly. However the apartheid government did make the 'non-white development' inferior. For example "non-white toilets" were in worse condition, and Bantustans (non-white homelands) were made up of mostly unarable and hilly landscapes. An exception was Bophutatswana, which had platinum and vanadium mines. Nevertheless, only 10% of Bophutatswana was arable land, and only 4 homelands were declared independence. None of the four "independent" homelands were ever recognised by any nation except South Africa.

I cannot agree with the statement above, the old Transkei Homeland had (and still has) some of the best agricultural land in SA, I worked there on a fencing project in 2000, there is flat open lands, sub-tropical climate, massive rainfall and deep soil (places where the local are over using field you will find erosion trenches of up to 8m deep, indicating how deep the topsoil is). I agree that the homelands were not really recognised since it used a lot of resources to try and develop them. One aspect that seems to be left out is always that when the Boer lost the Anglo-Boer war and the Brits Annexed SA they moved a lot of people to the central areas from the homelands to work on the mines (and impoverished them by doing so). This was the start of the relocation of peoples and finally led to the implementation of the apartheid system to some extend to rectify this problem. (By the way when was the last time you used a public bathroom today in RSA, good luck with that)...

What was the question again, O yes, what was wrong with Apartheid? Not an easy answer at all!

A few things to help you decide: Apartheid created the largest economy in Africa, The biggest BLACK middle class in Africa, had some of the lowest crime rates in Africa, had the lowest unemployment in Africa (few of these are still true today) but it had racial classification (very wrong) and Still in Place Today in the New RSA.

What are the apartheid cons?

Apartheid was not a pleasant thing, but in reality was little different from the segregation practiced in the US southern states at the same time.

What is the meaning of apartheid?

The word "apartheid" means segregation. It commonly refers to the laws which governed the Republic of South Africa during the period from the 1950s up until 1990.

Apartheid laws in South Africa favoured white supremacy and largely marginilised the non white communities. The apartheid era is famous for the oppression that was carried out on behalf of the state against South Africa's many anti-apartheid activists.

Although apartheid formally ended in the early 1990s, the many legacies it left behind are still prevalent in South Africa and thus the term is still widely used in policy documents that aim to pave the way for a better South Africa.

The term apartheid is often used to describe attempts by other states to achieve ethnic cleansing. Activists rely on the sympathy that the term invokes to win support in other parts of the world. Most recently, Palestinian rights groups have accused Israel of being guilty of apartheid. In other cases, human rights groups have accused Arab states of apartheid by treating Shiite and other minority sectarian groups as second class citizens.
