Asteroids

Asteroids, or planetoids, are rocks larger than meteorites but smaller than planets that orbit around the Sun.

Do meteors or asteroids burn up before they hit the earths surface?

Comets rarely come in to the atmosphere at all. On those occasions when a comet does collide with the Earth, it will pass all the way through the atmosphere and hit the surface within a second or two, causing massive destruction.

So it's probably just as well that it hardly ever happens.

What was the larger meteorite that hit the earth?

I believe it was a meteor shower from the Leonid meteor shower, but it was as big as a football field probably.I think God did this because he wanted to make a new race, and the new race is us humans.

Is an asteroid a reflector or shiner?

Yes, but not a really good one like a mirror is.

They reflect a little bit of light, and reflect quite a bit of radar radio waves.

Does the suns gravity hold asteroids?

Yes. Asteroids have some gravity, but it is very weak because of their low mass in comparison to an actual planet.

What are some examples of superstitious beliefs in Philippines about comets and asteroids?

Many cultures have superstitious beliefs about comets and asteroids. The Philippines do not seem to share superstitions of comets and asteroids.

What causes asteroids to leave the asteroid belt?

The smaller an asteroid, the more easily it can be "bumped" out of it's place by an exterior force.

it's position and direction of movement will change. It may find itself gravitationally re-related to some other asteroid, in which case it will stay in the asteroid belt. Or, it may get effected in such a way that it is knocked toward the inner solar system, and it will begin to fall towards the sun - and it may or may not be gravitationally caught by one of the inner planets before it gets to the sun.

Which one is bigger Eris or Ceres?

Eris is several times larger than Ceres.

How many life species will died out when if apophis hit the earth in 2029 or 2036?

about 60 or 70% of life species plus humans will died out when if the asteroid apophis when if hit the earth that asteroid is size of manhattan same size which killed off the dinosaurs

Is Saturn inside or outside the asteroid belt?

Saturn is outside the asteroid belt. It is one of the outer planets rather than the inner planets, and that determination is made by whether they are between the Sun and the Asteroid Belt, or not.

The order goes like this:

  1. The Sun
  2. Mercury
  3. Venus
  4. Earth
  5. Mars
  6. >>> Asteroid Belt <<<
  7. Jupiter
  8. Saturn
  9. Uranus
  10. Neptune
  11. Pluto etc.

What can impact a planet?

Meteroids or comets can impact on a planet.

The Trojan asteroids have orbits that?

The Trojan asteroids have orbits that are located along the same path as a planet, about 60 degrees ahead or behind the planet. They are in gravitationally stable regions called Lagrange points, which result from the interaction between the gravity of the planet and the Sun.

How do people react to comets?

Some with fear. Comets, which are called that because they appear to be "hairy stars," suggest that there are big changes in the otherwise stable heavens and this can be very upsetting. We know today that comets are relatively small, relatively common, and - unless one should actually hit the Earth, which is not very likely - pretty harmless. Probably because a big event in the sky seemed as though it should be connected with a big event on Earth, back during the fear period comets came to be associated with the death of kings. No everybody believed this. When the Roman Emperor Vespasian was told about a comet, he joked that since it was so hairy, it couldn't be a message for him, as he was bald.

How big are asteroids?

The average asteroid is no bigger than a house, but there are millions that are the size of football fields. The smallest ones that we can detect are the size of boulders, and most orbit somewhere between Mars and Jupiter in the Main Belt. There are uncounted millions of small asteroids and meteoroids.

Estimated approximate number of asteroids larger than a given diameter:

100 m - 25 000 000

300 m - 4 000 000

500 m - 2 000 000

1 km - 750 000

3 km - 200 000

5 km - 90 000

10 km - 10 000

30 km - 1 100

50 km - 600

100 km- 200

200 km- 30

300 km- 5

500 km- 3

900 km- 1

The four largest contain 51% of the mass of all the asteroids. (Ceres alone is larger than the dwarf planet Pluto and more than 1/3 the mass of all athe asteroids)

What would happen with global warming if earth is hit by an asteroid?

Depending on the size of the asteroid and the speed of its collision, millions of tons of dust will explode into the atmosphere and be carried all round the world, blotting out the sun.

Without the sun's heat the atmosphere would cool and global warming would slow. If the dust cloud remains for years many species will die. This is one of the theories for the disappearance of the dinosaurs.

Can fire really burn off asteroids or meteors?

Friction with the Earth's atmosphere really does destroy the smaller meteors that fall toward the earth. That friction makes the object so hot that it looks like a fire, but it is really just friction - not a fire.

Asteroids and meteors do not burn with fire. They are traveling at speeds from 17,000 mph to 50,000 mph relative to earth so that when they enter earth's atmosphere friction with the air heats them white hot which melts their surfaces, thermal stresses can cause them to explode in the air, and the smaller ones vaporize. Some can make it to the surface of the earth still red hot and if they land on flammable material can ignite fires. Some are large enough that they collide with the earth's surface with enough remaining velocity that they explode underground creating impact craters.

What are ways to calm peoples fear of large asteroids?

Large asteroids are quite dangerous but thankfully we are unlikely to be killed by one. "The chances of an individual dying from the aftermath of an asteroid collision are about one in 10 million per year" according to astronomer David Morrison.

Furthermore we have a natural protection from the Moon and its gravity which either catches or diverts a large portion of asteroids headed our way. Also we have quite a lot of satellites and earth based observation tools to detect and predict the path of asteroids headed our way. If an asteroid is likely to hit we have plans to deal with the problem ,although this largely depends on the size of the asteroid. What kind of minerals are present in asteroids?

Asteroids are said to contain traces of Gold, Platinum, and Palladium, in addition to Iron and Nickel. The quantity of such elements present in the asteroids depends upon the size of the asteroid.
