Comets rarely come in to the atmosphere at all. On those occasions when a comet does collide with the Earth, it will pass all the way through the atmosphere and hit the surface within a second or two, causing massive destruction.

Depending on the size of the asteroid and the speed of its collision, millions of tons of dust will explode into the atmosphere and be carried all round the world, blotting out the sun.

Without the sun's heat the atmosphere would cool and global warming would slow. If the dust cloud remains for years many species will die. This is one of the theories for the disappearance of the dinosaurs.

Friction with the Earth's atmosphere really does destroy the smaller meteors that fall toward the earth. That friction makes the object so hot that it looks like a fire, but it is really just friction - not a fire.

Asteroids and meteors do not burn with fire. They are traveling at speeds from 17,000 mph to 50,000 mph relative to earth so that when they enter earth's atmosphere friction with the air heats them white hot which melts their surfaces, thermal stresses can cause them to explode in the air, and the smaller ones vaporize. Some can make it to the surface of the earth still red hot and if they land on flammable material can ignite fires. Some are large enough that they collide with the earth's surface with enough remaining velocity that they explode underground creating impact craters.

Large asteroids are quite dangerous but thankfully we are unlikely to be killed by one. "The chances of an individual dying from the aftermath of an asteroid collision are about one in 10 million per year" according to astronomer David Morrison.

Furthermore we have a natural protection from the Moon and its gravity which either catches or diverts a large portion of asteroids headed our way. Also we have quite a lot of satellites and earth based observation tools to detect and predict the path of asteroids headed our way. If an asteroid is likely to hit we have plans to deal with the problem ,although this largely depends on the size of the asteroid. Asteroids are said to contain traces of Gold, Platinum, and Palladium, in addition to Iron and Nickel. The quantity of such elements present in the asteroids depends upon the size of the asteroid.
