Some people think it saved many American lives because they didn't have to invade the actual island of japan. It is estimated that around 1 million U.S. soldiers would have died in the invasion. More than that including all the casualties.

Also it stopped the USSR from demanding joint occupation of Japan and showed our superiority to them.

The Manhattan Project cost the government around $2 billion so it would be a waste not to use the product.

Lastly, the Japanese treated the U.S. POWs very cruely. Using the atomic bomb may have been a way of revenge for many people.

i think the government does lie to us, but for good reason. for example, if there was going to be some devastating disease in washington, the government would not want the world to freak out, they work to make sure these things don't happen, and if they do they try to make it to not hurt us in anyway, if they told everything it could leak to enemies to our nation and we would be vurnable, i think some things should be let out to the government but arent. good reason or not, i think we have the right to know some things, like alien sightings and things like that, the world has a right to know!!!!!

The United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Both targets were military (Hiroshima contained a significant military HQ, and Nagasaki a substantial naval base). The primary purpose of dropping the atomic bombs on Japan was to try to end the war faster.

However both had a secondary purpose as weapons effects tests to determine actual type and amount of damage produced by the new bombs compared to use of massive firebombing attacks with conventional bombs. This was why they selected target cities that had not been significantly bombed already and then the cities on this target listed were then made "prohibited firebombing targets", to make estimation of damage due to the atomic bombs simpler.

A tertiary purpose was to verify yields: the MK-I yield was not known as it had never been tested before use and the MK-III yield although known from the Trinity Test needed to be confirmed if it was reproducible from bomb to bomb.

There was no specific final decision to drop either bomb on Japan. Truman's authorization to the US Army Airforce was simply to drop the bombs as soon as possible after receipt of the weapons from Los Alamos. This was a blanket order covering all 23 bombs scheduled for production in 1945 as well as any made later until Japan surrendered. Los Alamos delivered the third atomic bomb to the Army Airforce in San Francisco on August 18, 1945 but as Japan had already surrendered 4 days earlier, it was returned to Los Alamos. The other 20 bombs were scheduled for production as follows: September - 3, October - 3, November - 7, December - 7.
