A stereo track is a track which has separate infomation for both the left and right speakers. Most recording programs let you create new audio tracks in either format. Use mono tracks for single instruments like voice or guitar, but stereo tracks for instruments that have stereo outputs, like keyboards, electronic drums and samplers.

The primary patents are owned by Fraunhofer Institute and Thompson Multimedia, who have combined them into a single patent portfolio. All manufacturers of MP3 players must pay a license fee to use the inventions covered by the patent portfolio in their products. (Some manufacturers of early MP3 players refused to pay the licensing fees and Fraunhofer took them to court and won). The Fraunhofer Institute collected about €100 million in licensing fees in 2005.
