Will your child get autism if exposed to toxins at 5 weeks?

No, your child cannot ever 'get' Autism as Autism is a neurological difference which they are born with - it's a result of genetics and development in the womb. Nothing your child is exposed to after birth will change your childs neurology, just like you can't give birth to a black child and have them become white by exposing them to toxins.

What is life like for an adult with autism or Asperger's?

I have aspergers so here is my opinion. Life will be difficult to a degree. You will run into some people who think that autism is a reason for them to make fun of you. Moreover, you will run into some people almost everywhere who treat you as inferior to them despite the fact you are still a human being. Also you will be an outcast to society. That doesn't mean you won't make friends, but the few friends you will make will accept you despite who you are. Family and friends will be among the few things that will keep you going in life, alongside your interests. At times you will feel apart and distant from the world, possibly so much that you would rather stay separated from everyone else than have to join and deal with society, when you are already an outcast. Having a wife and kids will probably not ever happen, as there are very few women out there who would go out with someone who is autistic. Furthermore, even if you are nice to everyone, you may still run into people who hate you because of what you are. However, you will still find enjoyment in life, as your family and friends shall ease your loneliness and your interests will help you deal with life. Life is harder for an autistic person for many reasons, as even a person with a low form of autism such as aspergers will have trouble communicating with peers and may do things when they are young that will cause them to be even more distanced from society later in life. This doesn't change the fact that autistic people shouldn't be allowed some joy and friends. Even the most autistic person has the right to finding happiness in life and although life is harder for a person with autism that doesn't stop autistic people from finding goodness in the world or from finding reasons to keep living, even when they are ridiculed many places they go.

How is autism characterized?

autism is characterized by a person having deficits in 3 core areas: social skills, speech, and behaviors.

what symptoms are shown by each person are as different as people are themselves. you would be hard put to find 2 people who display the exact same characteristics.

some of them in the social category are:

lack of eye contact

being indifferent to other people being present

not interacting with others

not knowing how to carry on a back and forth conversation

(in a child) not sharing their interest of something with others

some in the speech category are:

lack of speech or developing speech entirely

large delay in speech compared to age appropriate levels

disorganized speech

echoing what they have heard and not using spontaneious speech

not understanding speech (for example my son could not grasp on to the fact that objects and things had names. i could tell him to go get his cup and he could have some milk... he didnt know what a cup was or what milk was... but he would try to get it himself and new he needed the cup and would pull the milk out of the fridge...)

and some in the behavior category are:

tantrums with no apparent reason or cause

hand or arm flapping

spinning self or objects

lining objects up

strict adherance to routine (not able to tolerate changes)

obession with one topic or category

laughing for no apparent reason or cause

those are just a few... autism can show itself in many many different ways.

It could be; but not nessaserally, many people with autism (but by no means all) have learning disabilities, but if someone has learning difficulties but shows no Social Difficulties or any other autistic symptoms, then they most likely are not autistic.

What year did Andrew Wakefield say MMR Vaccine caused autism?

To be clear - Dr Wakefield has never actually said MMR causes autism - just that there was evidence that would merit investigating it and that the type of MMR vaccine being used should be changed to a different kind. In 1998 he and 12 other doctors/researchers reported on the care of 12 children at The Royal Free Hospital in England.

In that report they expressed the idea that clinical studies on the relationship between MMR, a new form of enterocolitis and autism needed to be done, to ensure there was no relationship between them. They said the medical history of the children and their findings while caring for them showed there MAY be a connection, and further studies were needed to ensure vaccinating with 3 live virus (as in the MMR) was safe.

Dr Wakefield recommended separate vaccines instead of the triple-virus MMR vaccine. At the time single shots were available.

As word of Dr Wakefield's recommendations spread, the British government stopped the procurement of single valent vaccines and the General Medical Council investigated and hounded physicians who procured and administered single valent vaccines, instead of the Glaxo Smith Kline MMR triple-jab.

==========

After the publication of Wakefield's paper in The Lancet- the prestigious British medical journal, other researchers were unable to reproduce Wakefield's findings or confirm his hypothesis of an association between the MMR vaccine and autism, or autism and gastrointestinal disease. After a British Journalist uncovered and published undisclosed financial conflict of interest information (Wakefield was getting money from people suing the vaccine company claiming the vaccine caused autism in their children), the British Governing Medical Council (GMC) - the governing body for physicians in Britain - opened an investigation against Wakefield and two former colleagues. Most of his co-authors withdrew their support for the study's interpretations

On 28 January 2010, a five-member statutory tribunal of the GMC found three dozen charges proved, including four counts of dishonesty and 12 counts involving the abuse of developmentally challenged children. The panel ruled that Wakefield had "failed in his duties as a responsible consultant", acted both against the interests of his patients, and "dishonestly and irresponsibly" in his published research.

Wakefield's study that was used to link MMR to autism was retracted by The Lancet and was subsequently labeled an "elaborate fraud" in an investigation published by the British medical journal BMJ. The investigation concluded the study's author, Dr. Andrew Wakefield, misrepresented or altered the medical histories of all 12 of the patients whose cases formed the basis of the 1998 study -- and that there was "no doubt" Wakefield was responsible.

Three months following The Lancet's retraction, Wakefield was struck off the UK medical register, with a statement identifying deliberate falsification in the research published in The Lancet and was barred from practicing medicine in the UK.

Wakefield's utter failure to conduct valid research does not disprove any possible links between vaccines and autism, but it is pretty obvious his "study" suggesting a possible link between the MMR vaccine and autism was worthless for that purpose.

Why do children with Asperger's Syndrome not interact well with their peers?

A symptom of Asperger's Syndrome is social impairment. The symptoms vary tremendously between cases and this is what makes the disorder so difficult to diagnose. Is autism only in children?

No, Autism is not only in children.

Autism is a neurological difference, a person is born Autistic just like a person is born neurotypical. An Autistic person will always be Autistic and thus become an Autistic adult. Autistic people often improve over time, learning social and communication skills as well as learning to cope with or mask autism characteristics in order to fit in to neurotypical society. Autistic adults often fit in better than children.

Can cats have autism?

Research has found out that animals think the way like autism savants. Even some people with autism claimed that their thinking processes are like an animal's. Animals are visual thinkers, they store their memories with pictures. In other words, animals make visual associations, just like autistic people. Fear is the most important emotion in animals, especially prey animals as sheep or horses. Fear is also the main emotion in autistic children.

Why will a child with autism refuse to eat certain foods?

Here are possibilities related to autism that might cause a child to refuse to eat certain foods:

  • It does not fit with the routine the child follows. The food is not what he or she is accustomed to eating. It is not what he or she eats for that meal of the day. The food is not served at the proper time of day. The food is not served on the appropriate plate or with the appropriate dinnerware.
  • The food causes sensory issues. It could be too bland or too spicy. It could have a texture the child dislikes.
  • The food is touching other food on the plate.

Do most people think people with autism are dumb?

Sadly, it is commonly perceived that people with Autism are not intelligent. This is in fact, not the case and I believe it is our job as Autism advocates to raise awareness about the fact that individuals with Autism can be productive members of society.

At a recent conference I attended on work opportunities for adults on the Autism Spectrum, world renowned Autism expert, Susan Bryson, noted that only approximately 25% of people with Autism have an intellectual handicap. She then continued to point out that many people on the Autism Spectrum possess valuable cognitive strengths including

  • excellent attention to detail
  • excellent pattern-detection skills
  • superior visual search skills
  • persistance
  • highly reliable
  • highly accurate and often perfectionistic, possessing a desire for precision and being unwilling to sacrifice accuracy for speed.

All of these attributes can make people with Autism extremely valuable employees so we all as a society have to start rethinking what it means to have Autism!

------------------------------- It depends on whether the individual person has been educated on what autism is. Sadly, much of society, and even some individuals who may work with autistics, still can't tell the difference between "Asperger's/HFA" vs. "Kanner's". Along with all of the other disabilities where autism can also be effected. It also depends on where people get their information on autism from, and based on how accurate it is, along with updated. I truly think that the media in all forms are causing many complications for all of us to be accepted into society.
