It's possible to dance ballet without soft ballet shoes. You will see dancers in contemporary companies dance without shoes all the time!

Soft leather, satin or canvas ballet shoes are worn mainly due to tradition, although there's some evidence wearing a shoe helps hold the muscles and bones of the foot in place, and reduces the risk of injury. However, you'll see contemporary dancers doing identical moves either in bare feet or in fabric/elastic foot covers called "dance paws".

For women, though, pointe shoes are essential as it's impossible to dance on the tips of the toes without them. They are specially strengthened to hold the foot in an upright position and spread the weight of the body across the foot instead of directly on to the toes.

I am a dancer and I do pointe at least 2 times a week. I do practise for an hour or 2 everyday and have been doing pointe for over a year now. i have found that the "ouch-pouches" from dance wear shops are the most effective as I have never had a blister and they are very comfortable to wear.

Well, it's a pretty ambiguous question, but if we're talking who changed ballet from 18th century tradition to what it is today, it would have to be Sylvie Guillem. Before her, nobody'd seen the 180 degree develope and nobody'd really been exposed to the "tricks" that are so common today. Today ballet's a freak show-- and I don't mean that in a derrogatory sense, but Sylvie Guillem certainly changed what's given merit these days as opposed to what once was given merit. Great stretches to do are the runners stretch and straddle. In runners stretch work everyday until you can put your elbows on the ground and see a clean line down your body. In straddle stretch to both side but do not round your back. Keep it straight so eventually you can put your chest flat you your leg. Another great stretch to do it get in a split position (right or left leg in front) and bend your front leg so that your foot is under you. Try and Bend your back leg up and grab it with your opposite hand and stretch it.

Also, when practicing your split if you are not all of the way down keep your knees completely straight so you can stretch out the muscles and tendons around your groin.

If you are talking about pointe shoes than, yes some men do wear them.

I assume you mean "toe shoes." "Pointe shoes." And yes. As for the official female costumes... well, sometimes the men do drag and dance the full-blown ballerina roles. The men walk a mile in their Pointe shoes. Some women find it touching, flattering. Some ballerinas worry the men are making them obsolete. Really! But... yes, this does happen.
