Does pointe ballet really deform your feet?
If you start pointe work when you are not ready, not strong enough, it can be very damaging to your feet and bones. If you sstart when you are ready and strong enough, you can certainly get blisters, etc. I have been doing pointe for about 6 or 7 years now and the backs of my heels have reddish calluses. My pinky toes as well are like big red knobs, callused over. Neither my heel or pinky toes hurt to the touch, although sometime if I dance en pointe for a while at a time the will hurt, as will the rest of your toes, depending on what kind of pointe work you do. I've been told ballet dancers will sometimes develop arthritis too later in life if you are serious about ballet and do it often. After 6 or 6 years of pointe work, my feet are now a lot stronger than before but generally feel and look great (minus the knobby pinky toes and heels).

How many hours do dancers have to dance?
Well this answer really just depends on what company you dance with, if you dance professionally, etc. I dance with a company although it is not profession and we do not get paid. We have a 1 and a half hour ballet class 4 times a week and a 1 hour partnering (pas de deux) class each week. You are supposed to go to class atleast 3 times a week to be able to perfrom with the company. When we have a performance coming up, we have rehearsal (depending on what part(s) you have) generally every Saturday leading up to the performance and the length is usually anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours.
American Ballet Theatre, the Pennsylvania Ballet, The Kirov Ballet and the Bolshoi Ballet
What level do you start wearing point shoes?
I started wearing pointe shoes when I was 11 and studying Grade 3 of the BATD syllabus. But I was very tall and therefore had to dance with girls older than me( similar height) so I didnt look stupid and therefore had to join in on pointe, personally I think this is a bit young as I have mangled feet.

Can you teach pointe to yourself?
if you are about to or are teaching yourself pointe work, stop! pointe work is for people with years of ballet training and 1 - 2 years of pre pointe or strengthening classes. like all things to do with ballet, you need to have a trained teacher to guide you through the proses and correct you when you go astray. pointe is dangerous enough as it is so tyring it without a proper teacher is going to be dangerous, recluse and down right stupid! nobody can teach themselves pointe. if they do they will ruin their feet and probably break something along the way.
hope i helped!

What is the difference between cecchetti ballet and ballet?
There is not just Cechetti Ballet and Ballet. You learn a ballet syllabus, there are many different ones. When you take an exam it is from an exam board for example Cecchetti but there are many others such as R.A.D., I.D.T.A. and I.S.T.D. However Cecchetti and RAD (Royal Ballet) seem to be the most common.
Cechetti grades are a lot more technically demanding and are considered harder. Grade 3 in Cecchetti would be equivalent to a Grade 4 or 5 in RAD. Cecchetti is also a lot harder to get a high mark in. You cannot compare exam results from Cecchetti and RAD fairly.
There is more focus on alignment and poise in Cecchetti than in RAD which becomes more useful if you want to become a professional. Some positions such as 'epaule' are only included in Cecchetti. I personally think Cecchetti is slightly better than RAD and all the others, having trained in RAD and Cechetti.
How do you know when a student is ready for pointe?
The student must have strong legs and ankles to be ready to go en pointe. To test them, hold a ruler flat on their ankle, then have them point their toes. If their toes dont touch the ruler when they point, they are ready. Also, make sure they are capable of straightening their knees completely. If they go on pointe with bent knees, they may get injured.

Who first danced in pointe shoes?
Ballet, as the art form we know today, had its roots in 17th century France in the court of Louis XIV. At first, all the roles, both male and female, were danced by men. It wasn't until the 18th century that women began to figure more prominently in the ballet world.
The first ladies danced in heavy floor-length costumes and heeled shoes. In the middle 1700's, Marie Camargo caused a sensation by shortening her skirts (to just above the ankles!) and removing the heels from her shoes. This adjustment enabled Mlle. Camargo to jump higher and allowed the audience to see her footwork.
The one element most associated today with ballet, the pointe shoe, did not emerge until early in the nineteenth century. We may never know which dancer was actually the first to dance en pointe. Current historians credit several dancers with being among the first. Pictures of Maria del Caro (1804) and Fanny Bias (1821) depict the ballerinas on the tips of their toes, or nearly so. Genevieve Gosselin and Amalia Brugnoli were among those receiving acclaim for their early development of what is now considered basic pointe technique.
It was perhaps Marie Taglioni who, at the height of the Romantic Era, developed the aesthetic beauty of pointe work, which enabled her to appear ethereal and weightless.
The first pointe shoes used by ballerinas of the early nineteenth century were little more than soft ballet slippers which were heavily darned at the tip. Dancers posed for barely a second on pointe. Today's pointe technique, which consists of relevés, pirouettes, hops and sustained poses, was not possible until the advent of the modern pointe shoe.
There are many different types of leaps in ballet but the main two are called grand jete (pronounced ju-tay) and sout de chat (so-day-shaw). The only differences between these two leaps is that sout de chat goes through developpe and grand jete does not.
Pointe shoes (aka toe shoes) are shoes that we ballerinas wear to enhance our performance. Contrary to popular opinion, Pointe shoes are not made out of wood, but of paper mache. The shoes give the illusion that we are on our toes, while in reality the shoes are supporting our weight and our toes are being cushioned by padding.
Pointe shoes are not comfortable, though, and many blisters, bunions, and foot injuries come from dancing "en Pointe." To be able to dance on Pointe you must have had several years of dance and very strong ankles.
