Chronological order of civil war battles?

Asked by Wiki User

Unlike most high school and even college history books, the American Civil War included more than 3 or 4 battles. There were probably 100 that would be classified as a "battle". It would take too much time to list all of them. Recomment you go to National Park Service website. It has a listing of battles by State and a brief synopsis of the battle and lists its commanders and number of troops, etc. But this is not all of them, as they omitted some that they did not consider to be a battle. Why was the battle of Chattanooga sometimes referred as the third battle of Chattanooga?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Because Chattanooga was object of a Union offensive for two times before the so called Third Battle of Chattanooga.

The first one was put in motion on June 1862, when the commander of the Union Western Sector Major General Halleck, ordered Buell's Army of Ohio to advance towards Chattanooga marching along the railroad Nashville- Murfreesborough-Chattanooga. The offensive went slowly on and in July the Federals were somewhat next to reach their goal but two raids of the Confederate cavalry, led by Morgan and Forrest, interrupted their long line of

communication, thus forcing the Union divisions to stop the action.

The second one started on August 16, 1863. It was led and successfully carried out by Major General Rosencrans, who after a brilliant advance succeeded in outflanking the Confederate Army under Bragg forcing them to move out of Chattanooga on September 9,1863.

No. It was a siege which looked as though it would destroy the Army of the Cumberland, and would have allowed the Confederates a big move North.

But Grant came East to relieve the Army of the Cumberland, and in the end, it was a Union victory.
