What would you hear, near beaches and ocean waves? Oceans and shores are one of the most heavily onomatopoeic situations that have been described in literature.

The wash of the ocean against sand and cliffs and shells is often a prime subject in literature and poetry, and many of the natural words we would use to describe it are onomatopoeic in nature. If you could only make one sound, to imitate the sound that a wave makes, washing to shore, what would it be?

It would be the sh sound -- growing to loudness, and then diminishing. After a wave recedes, you might still hear sounds that you would imitate with an s sound. With more violent waves, you might hear the k or hard c sound, or any of the explosive consonants.

You have to use your imagination to determine if the sounds of the words contain the sounds that are being described. Consider the following sentences:

The wave slowly receded from the sand.

[gentle and slow]

The sea crashed against the beach, shivering the shore.

[a bit more forceful]

The water slapped its salt against the cliffs.

[violent]

In the first sentence, there are few explosive consonant sounds. The sounds of the words are smooth, as the action being described is.

In the second, the action is a bit more active, and so are the sounds of the words. Although you have the sh and chsounds, mimicking the sound of water, you also have the k(hard c) sound, and the b sound.

In the third, you have the consonant sounds t, p, and the hard c, but with enough s sounds to still evoke ideas of the ocean.

Proper use of onomatopoeia is an art, and recognition of it is a skill.

In the King James version....

The word "beach" is not mentioned even once.

The word "sand" is mentioned 28 times.... but usually in reference to a large number of people.... the comparison being to the number of grains of sand on the shore, or in the sea.

Only the following verses use the word sand in a different way:-

* Exo 2:12 And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand. * Deu 33:19 They shall call the people unto the mountain; there they shall offer sacrifices of righteousness: for they shall suck of the abundance of the seas, and of treasures hid in the sand. * Pro 27:3 A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; but a fool's wrath is heavier than them both. * Jer 5:22 Fear ye not me? Saith the LORD: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it? * Mat 7:26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: * Rev 13:1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.

The word "shore" is mentioned 17 times:-

• In 2002, beach pollution prompted at least 12,814 closings and swimming advisories at ocean, bay, Great Lakes, and some freshwater beaches.
• Storm water and polluted runoff are potential problems at more than half (1,383) of all reported beaches with information on pollution sources, and 46% (1,152) report sewage as a pollution source.
• Beach pollution is usually infrequent and confined to local areas.
• Dirty runoff and storm water (led to more than 3,576 closings and advisories nationwide) and sewage spills and overflows (led to more than 1,390 closings and advisories nationwide) are the most frequently identified pollution sources.
• Rain is often a contributing factor to beach water pollution.
• The majority (87%) of closings and advisories in 2002 were issued after monitoring revealed the presence of bacteria associated with fecal contamination (source unknown in most cases).
• Swimming-related illnesses are usually not severe or life threatening, but can cause significant discomfort. Young children, the elderly, and people with impaired immune systems are at more of a risk than healthy, mid-aged people.
• Gastroenteritis (symptoms = diarrhea and vomiting) is the most common waterborne illness.
• A recent Southern California study revealed that people who swim close to flowing storm drains were 50% more likely to develop a variety of symptoms than those who swim further away from the same drain.
• Simple ways individuals can help to clean their local beaches include conserving water, using natural fertilizers, keeping septic systems functioning properly, disposing of boat wastes appropriately, and supporting laws that promote beach water monitoring and cleanup of pollution sources.
