Mussolini attacked Abyssinia in October 1935 and conquered the country in 4 months. King Haile Selassie fled into exile. The world protested this military action. But Mussolini made it look like their neighboring colony of Eritea was attacked. Of course this was a ploy to get the war started. The Italians held on to this territory until the British liberated it in 1941.

Benito Mussolini was dictator of Italy during the second World War. He banned all other political parties in Italy except his own, the Facist Party. A famous quote about him was: "He made the trains run on time."

Opinions about Mussolini among Italians varied significantly during his rule. Initially, many admired him for restoring national pride, improving infrastructure, and promoting economic stability after World War I. However, as his regime became increasingly authoritarian and involved Italy in World War II, public sentiment soured, leading to disillusionment and opposition. Mussolini had a great affinity for the Roman Empire and he wanted to revive it in the modern age as much as possible. It was not the only time a dictator has looked to the past in order to give his regime a perception of historical legitimacy. Hitler did it with the heroic German myths, and the Japanese did it with the samurai tradition.

I don't know if this is true but i remember my 8th grade social studies teacher told us a story that after beating Mussolini so bad his head fell off and rolled directly to a woman who loved him so much (not his mom) that she actually kept the head when she found it.
