Ms. Jolie's character liaises with the "RSO," which in DSS terms stands for Regional Security Officer - a.k.a. a DSS agent serving overseas. Another RSO reference can be found in the movie The Kingdom. When Jamie Fox's team goes to investigate a bombing in KSA, it was the RSO who was killed by the second blast. Not very uplifting examples, but examples nontheless. When not protecting Secretary Clinton, Foreign Ministers, the Dalai Lama, British Royalty, etc., the DSS investigates passport and visa fraud in the US. Just like the USSS investigates counterfeiting, the DSS has a vital role in upholding many USC's such as 18 USC 1028(A), 1542, 1544, 1001, etc. There are much fewer domestic field offices in the DSS than let's say the FBI, but the DSS agents manage to cover every state in the country and often liaise with their counterparts at the aforementioned Embassies and Consulates. This is often quite handy when the US Marshal Service comes asking about a fugitive they can not locate on their own.
