To get "wireless" access from a cable modem, you will need a wireless router in addition to the cable modem.

Wireless routers are made by Linksys, and a number of other vendors.

Start:

1. Plug the coax cable from the wall into your modem. (this is the "live" internet connection now powering your modem. The modem is now "live")

2. Run the ethernet cable from your modem into your wireless router. (this router is now "live")

3. Run the ethernet cable from the wireless router into your PC. (the PC is now "live")

You are basically looping the modem into the router, and the router to your PC, instead of going directly from the modem into the PC. The benefit of looping the wireless router in between the Modem and the PC is so that the wireless router can get a live internet signal and broadcast a "wireless" signal to your home and surrounding 100 foot area.

The reason you loop the ethernet cable from the wireless router (in step #2) back into your PC is so that the PC can get the internet connection. Most PC's don't have a wireless "receiver" to receive the wireless signal, and require a direct input from an ethernet cable.

Most laptops have wireless ("receivers" aka: modems) and can receive the signal from the wireless router (which is now actively receiving and broadcasting the signal) which we connected in step #2.

The concept is very similar to your home telephone with a wireless handset. The phone line runs into the base station, and you can walk around your home with a wireless phone. This is the same with your laptop, and the wireless router is just like the base station of your phone.

Switches are data link layer devices that, like bridges, enable multiple physical LAN segments to be interconnected into a single larger network. Switches can use different forwarding techniques-two of these are store-and-forward switching and cut-through switching. In store-and-forward switching, an entire frame must be received before it is forwarded. This means that the latency through the switch is relative to the frame size-the larger the frame size, the longer the delay through the switch. Cut-through switching allows the switch to begin forwarding the frame when enough of the frame is received to make a forwarding decision. This reduces the latency through the switch. Store-and-forward switching gives the switch the opportunity to evaluate the frame for errors before forwarding it. This capability to not forward frames containing errors is one of the advantages of switches over hubs. Cut-through switching does not offer this advantage, so the switch might forward frames containing errors. Many types of switches exist, including ATM switches, LAN switches, and various types of WAN switches. Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) switches provide high-speed switching and scalable bandwidths in the workgroup, the enterprise network backbone, and the wide area. ATM switches support voice, video, and data applications, and are designed to switch fixed-size information units called cells, which are used in ATM communications. LAN switches are used to interconnect multiple LAN segments. LAN switching provides dedicated, collision-free communication between network devices, with support for multiple simultaneous conversations. LAN switches are designed to switch data frames at high speeds. Figure 4-4 illustrates a simple network in which a LAN switch interconnects a 10-Mbps and a 100-Mbps Ethernet LAN. Address Translation.

A good quality modem, a fast gigibit (at least) router directly connection via Ethernet cable on the router. Don't use any extenders, they will make the call lag since it is traveling through multiple stops in your network if you use an extender. Just a phone base connected to a port on your router and a personal bought modem (not a modem that your ISP gave you).

You should only need to reboot after connecting new deviced and maybe after a power failure.

Well, i would guess that they could see what IP addresses you are connected to.

Try diagnos the problem on the PC/Laptop if this does not work get into the connection and disable it the enable it, If this does not work you might want to reset your modem and try again (only reset your modem if you understand how to do this.) If this does not work you might be best of calling you ISP.

Modern Cybernetics is usually considered to date from the work of Norbert Wiener. Whilst designing control systems, Wiener considered how a human would reach for an object - continually adjusting his hand until he reached the object. He formulated this behaviour mathematically and realised that he could use the same equations to describe how a man reaches for a cup and for a missile reaching a target.

Wiener used Cybernetics to describe this approach to problems; by comparing how Man (nowadays, "animals" is the term usually used) solves problems with how to solve them mechanically.

The principle technique of cybernetics is feedback; to take an extreme example, consider trying to land a space probe on a particular site on Mars. This is achieved to within a few kilometres on an object millions of kilometres away - an astonishing level of accuracy - like hitting a pinhead from a hundred miles away. At first look, this might seem impossible, but the probe is measuring the difference between where it is and where it wants to be (the error) and correcting for it (feeding back the error).

Usually modems do not require any configuration. But your router has to configures to get external IP from a DHCP server or whatever your internet provider is using.

What is FTA?

FTA is the acronym for Free to Air. FTA signals are unencrypted signals. They can be reliably received via any broadcast receiver. This allows viewers to hear radio and see television programming like CNN and HBO, for example, clearly.

The simplest way to think of FTA is that it is akin to television what shortwave radio is to radio.

The Cost of FTA

While FTA is not encrypted signals, this does not necessarily mean they are free. Depending on the geographic area and the medium delivered, some FTA programming is paid for by viewers.

Examples of Paid FTA

Satellite TV: As FTA is sometimes delivered via satellite, the consumer pays for it, usually in the form of a subscription service. This is because satellite television usually offers a wider range of services and channels than more traditional television.

Licensing Fees: Most countries require what's known as a broadcasting license to send out programming to the viewing public. This includes television and radio.

The manner in which broadcast licensing fees are collected vary from country to country. Radio was the first broadcast medium to collect broadcast licensing fees. When television came along, many countries simply expanded the radio broadcast license to include television broadcast licensing fees. Other countries created a separate license to cover television programming.

No matter how it's collected, most countries use the fees collected under broadcast licensing in similar ways, ie, to fund projects like Public Broadcast System (PBS) programming. This ensures that broadcasts without funding from more market-driven standbys like commercials can also be shown.

Licensing fees for FTA programming can take several forms, eg, voluntary donation and/or product/service sponsorship.

Voluntary donation is one of the most popular ways. If you've ever viewed a PBS program, then you're probably familiar with this method of paid-for FTA programming. Usually, between segments, a PBS representative or an announcer tells you how important it is to donate if you enjoy the type of programming PBS offers.

Then, an 800 number or and address is given so you can call or send in your donation, which can be paid for by check or credit card. This is done numerous times throughout the program, and donators are customarily rewarded with some type of gift, usually based on some type of tiered system.

For example, if you donate $20, you might receive a t-shirt; $50 free DVD of the program you're viewing, or $250, a box set of programming on "x" subject.

Collecting FTA licensing fees via sponsorship is a little different. Sponsorship is more or less corporate branding.

To explain, a company may agree to sponsor a certain athlete or team in exchange for their brand being visibly displayed. So, when you turn on the TV to see a car race, for example, all the signage along the track route will be of the sponsor.

Compared to buying slots of air time that viewers may or may not see, this is ideal way for most corporate clients to advertise their products/services.

Many television and radio customers are only accustomed to receiving the channels that their local service providers offer. But, did you know that worldwide, experts estimate that there are over 5,000 free to air (FTA) radio and television channels available to the listening and viewing public.

Let me add that the person who spoke of ADSL actually erred a slight bit because SDSL and VDSL also use copper to the site. While all three DSL services typically are trunked on optical fiber, the last mile is most often done in copper as that is what most structures have pulled up to the service drop.
