This is very simple, but takes a whole lot of unscrewing and screwing. First you must take the radiator overflow tank off. Just two screws, simple. Then take off the serpentine belt. Next, unscrew the power steering just in case the pipes get in the way but dont take it all the way off, keep the pipes connected. Now take off the pulley, there wont be very much space but take your time. Then you may take the screws off the water pump there are about 20 of them (they should be size 10mm size, plus some star screws, there should be two of them), good luck with that. Then replace the gasket and make sure there is a good amount of fluid, ask your local Murray's man about that, then put all things back on exactly how they came off.

The fuel pump is in the gas tank on the '97 sls. To access it u must drop the tank from the vehicle. It's not that difficult to do, did mine today, took about 1 hour from start to finish. Steps - jack up the car, place jack stands, jack up again to higher level, adjust jack stands, take a smoke break, remove clamps on tank fill/vent hoses, remove three bolts holdings tank straps, un-clip the three quick connect fuel lines at the fuel pump, push the tank from under the vehicle.
Of course, be smart, and first release the fuel system pressure before doing any of the above.

If you don't care to do the job yourself be prepared to pay $700 - $1,000 to have it done (that includes the cost of a new fuel pump w/ fuel level sending unit).
