Care of Birds

Cage birds have been valued for thousands of years. In the past three or four centuries, birds have been bred extensively in captivity. Keeping a pet bird is very different than keeping a pet mammal. They are not just a feathered kitten or puppy. Avian companions require special care and this is the category to find out all about that.

For how long to Mallard ducklings stay with parent?

A duck doesn't actually need its mother. You can buy baby ducks that are 1 day old at markets. A baby duck doesn't get milk from its mother or some type of food from its mother, a baby duck just needs its mom to find food for it and protect it from danger. You can actually raise a baby duck from 1 day old to 2 weeks and even 5 weeks old without its mother.

Can parakeets live in an outdoor aviary?

It depends on many factors. Is the cage large enough (i.e. is it an aviary?)? Is the climate temperate? Is the area sheltered from inclement weather and wind? Is there enough shade? Many factors must be considered before making the decision to house a bird outdoors, and one must always remember that parrots, especially very intelligent species such as African Grays, require a great deal of socialization to be happy. They should have plenty of time outside their cages every day and plenty of opportunities to interact with their family.

How do birds grow?

In most birds, reptiles, insects, fish, and two types of mammals (the echidna and the platypus) an egg (Latin, ovum) is the zygote, resulting from fertilization of the ovum. To enable incubation the egg is usually kept within a favourable temperature range as it nourishes and protects the growing embryo. When the embryo is adequately developed it breaks out of the egg in the process of hatching. Some embryos have a temporary egg tooth with which to crack, pip, or break the eggshell or covering.

Oviparous animals are animals that lay eggs, with little or no other development within the mother. The study or collecting of eggs, particularly bird eggs, is called oology.

Reptile eggs, bird eggs, and monotreme eggs, which are laid out of water, are surrounded by a protective shell, either flexible or inflexible. The special membranes that support these eggs are traits of all amniotes, including mammals.

The 1.5 kg ostrich egg is the largest egg currently known, though the extinct Aepyornis and some dinosaurs have had larger eggs. The Bee Hummingbird produces the smallest known bird egg, which weighs half of a gram. The eggs laid by some reptiles and most fish can be even smaller, and those of insects and other invertebrates can be much smaller still. by:bre watch me on youtube.com (babyb394)

Why do parakeets balance on one leg?

Birds don't lie down when they rest, so they spend most of their time standing. They will tuck up one leg to give it a break, and usually switch to the other leg after a while. Tucking up one leg serves the same purpose as a person sitting down on a chair to rest, birds just have to do it one leg at a time.

How do you tell if your budgies a boy or girl?

It depends on the species, as some are sexually dimorphic (visual difference between male and female). Also, if the bird carries a sex-linked mutation, it can be visually sexed. For example in Peach-faced Lovebirds, a female ino and a male pallid will create pallid females and pallid ino males. These are sex-linked mutations. The Lovebird species which are sexually dimorphic are the Madagascar, Abyssinian, and Red-headed Lovebird. Non sexually dimorphic species are the Peach-faced, Masked, Fischer's, Lilian's, and Black-cheeked Lovebirds. Current sex-linked mutations in Peach-faced Lovebirds are Cinnamon, Ino, Pallid, and Opaline. In households with single Lovebirds that are not sexually dimorphic, the only way to know without DNA testing or probing, is whether or not any eggs are laid. Though that is not a guarantee as many females do not lay eggs if there is improper care. Females do tend to be more aggressive, males tend to be more vocal as well, though that isn't always the case. The pelvic bone in females who have laid eggs previously will be split, whereas a males will be fused. Young females do not always have a space, though their pelvic bone is more rounded. Without a comparison it is not reliable. The best way to be sure is through DNA testing, though if you don't plan to breed, it shouldn't really matter.

How do you keep birds from roosting in your spouts and eves?

One way is to give them nowhere to land. It is simple! At our local high school they use wire or nails. You do not have to worry about hurting the birds because they are too smart to gt stuck. You could also place a scare crow or cate in the rafters. *You can also string a tight horizontal line of monofilament fishing line about 3 inches above the place where they land. That will end the problem.

How much do parakeets cost a petland?

I wouldn't get a parrot from petco because a lot of birds at petshops are way overpriced and you don't always know the history of the bird. I would try to contact a breeder. That way you know the true health and genetics of the parrot. Also, a lot of breeders will sell the birds for cheaper than pet shops. Petshops also don't always know the age of the bird. A lot of parrots are also very set in their ways after they become adults, and some of the larger parrots are harder to train once they get attached to another person. I would definitely go with a breeder and get a baby. That way you can bring them up the way you want to and don't have to deal with another person's training.

Can a male and female canary live in the same cage?

Yes they can! Personal experience with jungle corns (which are crosses between corn snakes and kingsnakes) has determined that keeping a male and female corn snake does not implicate issues. Other people have often reported successfully keeping two or more snakes of the same species together, whether they are all male, all female or mixes of male and female. Sometimes people think they have two snakes of the same sex and find out that one of the snakes was wrongly sexed, when they end up with an unexpected clutch.

However, it is important to feed them separately. If not the snakes can go for the same prey and injure one another. It is also important to keep a close eye through the breeding season. Sexually mature females, that do not yet have the right size and weight to successfully lay eggs, can encounter problems when laying eggs. This is called dystocia and can result in the snake's death. It is not recommended to keep young snakes together. Cannibalistic behaviour has often been reported with young snakes, especially when dealing with hatchlings. The chance of young snakes eating each other is higher when they are not fed separately. When two young snakes start eating the same prey, they will eventually meet at some point and one will try to eat the other. This would often result in both snakes to die. One will obviously die because it has been eaten, the other will not be able to handle such a large meal and will suffocate.

How often do you feed baby robins?

Baby robins need to eat every 10-20 minutes from dawn to dusk, with a 2-3 hour break around midday. Feed them bits of sweet fruits like melon, apple, berries, etc. You can also give them bits of grain bread soaked in clean water.

Do not feed wet cat/dog food as this very easily clogs the breathing holes on the inside of the beak.

I recommend a pair of fine tipped tweezers and very carefully dropping each bit into the open beak. The bird should have a bowel movement each or every other feeding.

How can you find out the gender of a bird?

Most love birds are androgynous meaning males and females look identical. The only way to tell for sure if you have a boy or girl is to take it to your local board certified avian vet and have it DNA tested.

Are parrots really fast learners?

Please do not buy a parrot just for it's talking ability. There are many other considerations far more important to keep in mind, such as cleanliness, general noise level, companion ability, aggressiveness, personality, cost etc. etc.

Check out these species of parrot that are known to be good talkers and see if its needs can be upheld in your situation.

-Congo African Grey

-Mynah

-Yellow Naped amazon

-Macaw

-Eclectus

-Quaker Parrot

-Budgie

-Lorikeet/ lory

Keep in mind that as a generalization these species learn to mimick well, but there may be individuals that never speak a word. All of these varieties require at least 2 or more hours of daily interaction with you and your family and fairly large cages (exception: budgie)

How can you tell a boy bird from a girl bird?

If your chicken is a couple months old, the you need to look at their wing feathers. here are the steps:

  1. First you need to catch the chicken.
  2. Put your fingers, not your thumb, under the wing.
  3. Then gently press your thumb to the wing.
  4. Carefully pull the wing away from the body...CAREFULLY!! It may pull it's wing away, so you may have to calm it down. Use soothing words and whispers, then redo the steps.
  5. Now spread the wing out, and if the feathers are short near the body and long in the front...it is a rooster. But if it is all the same length...it's a hen!!!
