When I was 38 years old there was some land being cleared across the street. As my husband and I were walking along we heard this little squeak and I looked down and saw a baby mouse (my husband still says it was a white rat. LOL) and it had hardly any hair on it although it's little eyes were open. Well, I'm soft-hearted and I brought it home. He was so fat he practically rolled where he went, so it was easy to corner him by the front door and I grabbed him (had electrical wire gloves on) and got him down to the field. Thought you might enjoy that story and yes, you can do the same thing, but don't be stupid like me and put it in a cage until it's old enough to get out in a field. * You can take it in and feed it what you would feed a pet mice. They will probably not live as long because they are use tof running in the wild and eating grass but whats the difference they will die outside. * Leave the babies with their mom and pretend there not even there because if you touch with them then you might accidentally kill them! take it easy and slow and try not to frighten them. you can feed the mama mouse pretty much anything, except for, Oreo cookies and also never feed them milk because milk has a bad ingredient that will surely kill the poor mice a just stay calm! Rats don't believe in evolution, so what would she know (or care) about the weakest link? Unlike humans (the weirdest creatures ever), rats aren't working to improve their species by "removing the weakest link", and according to Darwin's theory, that's nature's job. The weakest die off naturally, the mother doesn't cull them.
But yes, mother rats occasionally do eat their young, as do most predatory mothers. Nobody really knows why. Maybe it's her hunter instinct saying "it wiggles and its weak, eat it" (or in the rats case "its soft and smelly, eat it").

How long will baby mouse live without mom?
Newborn, a day or two. They are too small to even feed with a dropper at this stage. I did find some wild newborn mice once. A cat had killed their mother and he was trying to get under a discarded door. I found six naked babies underneath, and finally got the idea to cut a tiny piece of flannel and dip it in warm milk. I fed them every two hours for two weeks. Then I used a two inch baby bottle from one of my dolls, and fed them six times a day. Then I went to soggy cream of wheat. When they started to try to jump out of the shoebox, I let them loose to have their chance. My folks had a fit the whole time, but it was summer vacation, so I just ignored them.

They cannot be confined to one room like a mouse cage. It all depends on the individual person.

How do you train a mouse to use a litter box?
It is URGENT that you gently rub the lower belly and anal area of the baby mouse to get it to poop. It cannot go on it's own (this is why mother animals lick their young in these areas, it stimulates them to go potty). If you do NOT do this, they can die from poisoning from their own feces and get backed up or bloated. Do this to them every time they eat (afterwards). If nothing happens, wait a few minutes and try again. Best to use a q-tip or your finger that is warm and damp. :)
