Care of Mice and Rats

Well, I've started feeding my 4 day old orphan baby mouse 2 hours apart, my Mom said that's what i should be doing but im not sure what im going to do tomorrow when i go to school cuz my teacher i terrified of mice its kinnda funny. wed sites say start by feeding it kitten/puppy formula but i started with baby formula that my sister drinks and he seems to like it so idk. i would ask a vet or someone though just to make sure.

No. Mice do not technically breath with their gills extract dissolved oxygen from water, afterward excreting carbon dioxide. While this is respiration it is not technically breathing. Mice generally breathe with their lungs.

I have found no sure way to keep them out of a barn. Some of the things that will help is to have cats that stay at the barn. You can buy poison at your local feed store that help some. Try to keep grain in sealable containers, such as metal barrels with lids that shut tight. Keep the floor clean and free of spilled grain. I recomend that you should get the following :a box that can fit a mouse trap get as many as you feel is necessary but I recomend 6 boxes, then some poision,some peanut butter, and as many mouse traps as many boxes. then carefuly stick the poision in the peanut butter then mix it together and put some on a mouse trap. Then set the mouse trap in the box. The boxes are for keeping the animals away from what looks tasty to them. Put the traps by a wall. Hope it works.

Mice, in general, can survive only 2-3 without food or water.

I have three pregnant rats. They are about 8 months old and 3-4 weeks along. They got pregnant as soon as we got the male and he was much young. I'm sure they could have gotten pregnant a lot younger. I know this wasn't a straight forward answer but this is my first experience allowing them to breed. They are great pets...I love them.

Really any vegetable in moderation, same with fruits. Dried fruits and vegetables, rat food 'trail mixes' sold at stores or other items of this nature. Do NOT feed rats cheese, their bodies do not know how to process it and it can cause heart problems and weight issues.

Just start out with any boxes! I'm making one for fun and using cardboard boxes that I had lying around the house. Cut holes/ shapes in the boxes for the rats to go in and out of, use paper towel tubes or toilet paper tubes for mazes, and use cut out pieces to make ramps and levels inside of the boxes for the rats to climb around on.

Maybe put some chew toys inside of it, some hammocks if you have a clubhouse big enough, and just things that the ratties may enjoy!

Probably the best way to get rid of mice outside would be to get a cat. Keep things clean and garbage tightly covered. Peppermint or clove essential oil and mouse repellent could also be used to keep mice away from areas outside.

You should try & handle baby rats from 5 days onwards. It the mother tries to bite you, or you're scared of her rejecting the babies after wards, you can wait till they are opening their eyes or 3 weeks old.

Mice can be cannibalistic if given the right circumstances. Anyone that breeds mice will attest to the fact that mothers will not hesitate to cannibalize their babies if they believe they are in danger of some sort. This is both to regain some of the energy lost by having the babies (and if she believes they are going to be eaten by a predator otherwise, giving them a quick death.)

If 2 male mice get in a fight, and one kills the other, they have been known to eat the dead one.

Starvation can also provoke a mice to attack another mouse for a food source. But that's pretty rare seeing as they can eat just about anything they find. And they can survive on the smallest amount of food.

I don't get your question but if you mean if you buy a mouse and feed it to a snake how long will it live then the answer is a couple minutes because the snake will soon sneak up on it and swallow it whole.

In my opinion, rats and mice are not animals that we should be afraid of. The media makes us think that they are dirty, disease infested animals, but that is just not true. They make great pets, though they have short lives. As for it being normal or not to be afraid of them, I think that people have preconceptions about those animals due to the media, and lots of people would not be afraid of them if they just took the chance to research the animals.

You can use the catmilk for the purpose which you can buy in well equipped stores and petshops, cowmilk is not suitable.Best is the powder one which you prepare with warm water, the measures are usually written in the can itself.Make sure you have a little feeding bottle to prepare the mixture, it should come with the milkpowder can but you can find one easily in petstores.Once you have shaken well the mixture so all the powder is melted in the warm water test the warmness to your hand like you would with a babybottle, if its too hot wait a little. Put some milk into the small pipette, take he mouse firmly in your hand so you keep its head between your thumb and forefinger, dont squeeze too hard, and put the end of the pipette in his mouth pushing the milk little by little from the tip of the pipette.Give in very small doses so the little fellow dont choke on it.If some milk gets in his nastrils clean it before you continue. I have used this technic with my dwarfhamsterbabies so you can imagine how tiny they are and yet I have managed to keep them alive when teir mommy could have not. Hope this helps someone.

Mice cannot live more than two to four days without water or a source of moisture.

Hydration gel packs are used to keep mice alive and healthy during any sort of transport for labs or pet stores. Whoever wrote this must hate mice.

They like to stay clean so you will see them taking out debris they no longer want in their homes. They like our homes because they are safer, cleaner, warmer, drier and there is a ready supply of food.

My mice - all 22 of them are strict vegetarians. I would not advise you to try feeding them meat. Of course, I'm quite certain you'll encounter those people who say feeding mice meat is fine but just think of all the additives and chemicals that is in the meat. Just look at what eating meat does to people - not good.

Rats are natural predators of mice and are known to hunt and kill them. They may occupy the same space in the wild since they have similar diets and needs but this would still result in some casualties on the side of the mice.
