Carlsbad Caverns National Park contains nearly 47,000 acres of rugged desert landscape. In addition to touring the caves, visitors attend ranger programs on a variety of subjects, watch wildlife, picnic, drive the scenic loop road, and hike backcountry trails. Carlsbad Cavern is the main tour cave, with three miles of paved trails. There are two self-guided tour routes - the steep and difficult Natural Entrance Route and the partially wheelchair accessible Big Room Route. There are also a variety of guided tours available which range in length and difficulty. Elevators are available to deliver visitors to the cave's Big Room level and return them to the Visitor Center.

The temperature of the caves within Carlsbad Caverns National Park ranges from 56°F (13°C) inside Carlsbad Cavern, the park's most famous tour cave, up to about 70°F. Within the park's large caves which extend to depths over 1000 feet (300 meters) from the surface, there may be a difference in temperature depending on the depth.
