Cat Maintenance

Cat maintenance focuses on the hair and claws of the cat. Combing a cat’s fur is an excellent way of getting rid of hair balls and checking for fleas. One should provide a scratching post to keep the cat's nails trimmed.

Why is cat gut so called?

Catgut is so named due to its historical use of intestines from various animals, including sheep and goats, rather than cats. The term "gut" refers to the gut or intestinal lining used to create the strings, which were commonly used in musical instruments and surgical sutures. The misconception about cats likely arose from the name, but it has no actual relation to felines.

How do you convert a house cat to a barn cat?

There are several things you need to consider when converting a house cat to a barn cat. Here are a few to start you off!

1. Is your cat declawed? If he is, you may not want to let him be a barn cat. The reason for this is pretty simple: the possible conflict of cyotes, foxes, raccoons, ect. You want your cat to be able to protect himself.

2. Does he go outside normally? I am simply asking this one to see if you don't really need to do anything other than feed him outside instead of in. (Note: don't change it all at once, let him in for less and less amounts of time until he is completely an outdoor cat.)

3. What other care will you give him? This one is very important. For example, will you feed him canned food and water, or will he have to catch his own mice? Will you provide him with healthcare, or will he be just that old stray in the barn? It's best to find a happy median; for example feeding him every other day and taking him to the vet only when he is sick.

Can you flea bathe a kitten?

well you can bathe baby kittens i meen it cant really hert the cat, and even though they bathe themselves they dont always get the germs, such as those nastey pieces of kitten poop or littter between those paws you never no if its really clean. so yes u can bathe a kitten. it pretty much depends on the cat alot of people do bathe cats and some people dont, it just depends. No, you should never bathe kittens, leave that to the mother cat to do cats unlike dogs cannot swim.

ANSWER

NO , if you do this most animals can possibly reject their baby, and either kill it or not feed it and then it will die , the baby's have their mothers scent on them and this is what they recognize, if you wash it the scent will fade, it may not recognize it as its baby.

if its totally unavoidable then wash it but you should wipe it in something that smells of its mother after and im not sure if that actually will work so again, dont just do it because you want to.

when they are older its fine, to wash them, preferably over 7 months old.

How much will it cost to euthanize my sickly cat?

The Humane Society of silicon valley charges $125 for euthanizations and $25 for body removal costs. 15 years ago they did for free. This is similar to what other nonprofits now charge. My local vet charges $110 for the euthanization and $105 for the cremation -a mandatory cost, plus charges for physical examination.

In the Midwest, this is a pretty steep charge - most veterinarians would likely charge less than $50 for a simple euthanasia.

When do you have your kitten spayed?

Both male and female kittens can be spayed as early as 10-12 weeks of age, although this varies somewhat from vet to vet. Cats usually reach sexual maturity around six months old and some even younger at four months, so it is best to spay kittens before that age.

Make sure you get kittens neutered and spayed (with six or so weeks indoors for recovery) before ever letting them outside. Even cats under a year old can get pregnant, and that could kill a young cat. Plus then you've got more kittens on your hands, and it's not good to take a litter of kittens to a shelter.

Should I givemy male cat both wet and dry food?

Ask your vet about that. Cats are different and there are different answers and reasons. One of my vets told me that male cats need wet food to prevent urinary tract infections. They've got tiny urethras that can become stopped up completely with an infection, so they need the extra water in their diet. Of course, my other vet says that now the tooth decay that can result from wet food is considered a bigger threat. I have no clue who is right, so now I use both wet and dry to try and get the best of both.
