This is true. Although the Romans were also known for architecture, sculpture, paintings, and mosaics, ceramics were their major triumph.

Vases, urns, and jars were huge accomplishments. They were not only known for their design and techniques, but also for the reliefs that were painted on them. Ceramic painting was a very intricate art form, up into the beginning of the Hellenistic period.

Yes, unlike the true Plains tribes further east, the Shoshone did produce pottery, up to about 1850. The clay was found locally, and decoration was rare; pots were generally of inferior quality.

How do you know if a plate is oven proof?

It will probably say so underneath. If a piece does not have the words "ovenproof" proceed with caution. Although all pottery is kiln-fired, that does NOT mean that it can safely cope with the (much lower) temperatures in a domestic oven.

(The reason that non-ovenproof ware cracks in an oven is:

(i) expansion takes place too fast; and

(ii) there may be a residual water content that expands into steam.

It follows that almost all ceramic objects can be reheated to high temperatures, provided it is done slowly enough to avoid expansion-cracking).

What is the name of that man Who excavate historic sites and discover interesting objects like coins and pottery?

People who are trained to excavate historic sites are known as Archaeologists. They are looking for any clues that will help them to know what was there, when it was built, who built it, why it was built and so on. They are not just looking for items such as coins and pottery, although if there are any then they are of great help in putting a date on when people lived there.

How do you melt paraffin?

The way I do it is by putting the paraffin in a small pot and then putting the small pot in a larger pot half full with water, bring the water to a boil, heat the small pot with the paraffin until melted. Paraffin is wax, pure and simple. So it is quite simple to just heat the product until it melts. Purchased from the shop, it usually comes in one pound blocks in the US. It is a petroleum product so it will burn and catch fire. To melt it properly, use a water boiler. If you do not have this item, simply put a large pan of water to heat and place a smaller pan inside with the paraffin inside. Simmer the water and the paraffin will melt inside the smaller pan. It is not a hugely quick process but it is safe and will not burn down the kitchen. Do not microwave this item as it will produce unexpected problems. Chopping the paraffin into smaller pieces will produce a quicker melt. Adding used crayons will give nice effects if you are making candles. A word of thriftiness...do not use your good pan for paraffin melting as it is impossible to remove all the residue from the pan. I would suggest that you make a trip to your thrift shop or salvage store and get a cheap pan to use strictly for paraffin. If you are mold making, have the mold handy to pour directly out of the pan. Use protection because unexpected splashes will leave burns as paraffin will "stick" to skin and produce nasty burns.

What are some different types of clay?

Kaolin:

This is very pure clay and serves as a standard to compare other clays for glazes.

Ball Clay:

Similar to kaolin, but the particles were deposited in swampy areas where the organic acids and compounds released from decaying vegetation served to break down the clay particles into even finer sizes than those of sedimentary kaolins.

Stoneware:

These are, generally, plastic clays that fire in the range of cone 6 to 10.

Fireclays:

These are high-firing clays commonly used for insulating bricks, hard firebrick and kiln furniture. Some are plastic, some aren't.

Earthenware:

These are low-firing clays (cone 08 - 02).

Slip Clay :

These are clays that naturally contain enough flux that they function as a glaze without further additions.

What are pottery glazes made of?

it is a mixture of glasses and colours, ground to a fine dust and mixed with water to form a type of paint. When pottery is coated with this paint, and then fired, the glasses melt and bond with the clay, and the colours change in the heat.

Can I use clay that has been frozen for pottery?

Yes, as clay contains water and relies on it for its chemical structure it can freeze. More specifically the water inside the clay can freeze. This process will destroy the structure of the clay and really has no purpose other than to ruin clay -- don't do it.
