What is a flat piece of clay?

Clay is a term used to describe a group of hydrous aluminum phyllosilicate (phyllosilicates being a subgroup of silicate minerals) minerals , that are typically less than 2 μm (micrometres) in diameter. Clay consists of a variety of phyllosilicate minerals rich in silicon and aluminum oxides and hydroxides which include variable amounts of structural water. Clays are generally formed by the chemical weathering of silicate-bearing rocks by carbonic acid but some are formed by hydrothermal activity. Clays are distinguished from other small particles present in soils such as silt by their small size, flake or layered shape, affinity for water and tendency toward high plasticity.

What are the advantages of ceramic gate valve?

The first feature is the double congestion and emission function:the fixed ball used spring floating seat, no matter open or closed. The fluid is stopped by valve seat beside the upstream and downstream and the residue left in the cavity is let out through drain valve. s automatic pressure relief function: when the rising medium temperature in valve cavity arouses unusual boost, there is no need to use safety valve to let out pressure automatically but just depends on the valve seat function, which is very important to the safety of liquid medium transportation. The third feature is the fire proofing structure: valve has the function of fireproofing and both its design and manufacture follow theAPI607 and API6FA code requirements.

Is Blue Mountain pottery worth money?

The simple answer is, yes, blue mountain pottery is "worth money", since there are collectors out there willing to pay to acquire pieces of it. How much depends on the rarity of any given piece, but most of it will not make you rich, least of all off a single piece. The more common pieces may be worth as little as $5 and the rarest have gone on eBay for several hundred dollars (up to $500 or so). It may go up in value, as the company closed down at the end of 2004, but this depends on the collectors continuing to be interested in it, of course.

How can you harden an oil based modeling clay?

Useful for many moldmaking and sculpting undertakings. Unlike water-based clay, oil-based clay will not harden and may be used repeatedly. It is ideal for temporary molds and models. Good for making dams when molding and casting. Soft enough to make impressions of leaves or other habitat materials. Several leading bird taxidermists, most notably Ed Thompson of Lilburn, Georgia, like to use oil-based modeling clay to set the eyes in their bird mounts. This gives them the freedom to slightly modify the eye angle or depth after the bird has begun to dry. Roma Plastilina Modeling Clay is the number one choice of discriminating sculptors everywhere. Grayish-green color, medium firm.

Can clay melt?

Melting point varies based on the minerals that compose the clay(???), and firing time seems to be just as important[1]. Try to find out the composition of the specific type of clay you're using, and ask local potters and suppliers. Prepare a sample and ask a kiln operator to fire it, checking occasionally to see how the clay is reacting.

During the firing process, the clay is gradually heated through various stages of chemical change until the particles begin to melt and fuse together (vitrification)[2][3]. It has 'matured' when the clay has reached its highest density before beginning to deform. Over-firing can actually reduce it to a puddle.

The firing process can be monitored using 'cones', pieces of specially mixed clay that begin to melt at specific temperatures[1][4].

This is true. Although the Romans were also known for architecture, sculpture, paintings, and mosaics, ceramics were their major triumph.

Vases, urns, and jars were huge accomplishments. They were not only known for their design and techniques, but also for the reliefs that were painted on them. Ceramic painting was a very intricate art form, up into the beginning of the Hellenistic period.

Do the Native American Indians of the Pomo tribe make pottery?

Yes, unlike the true Plains tribes further east, the Shoshone did produce pottery, up to about 1850. How do you know if a plate is oven proof?

It will probably say so underneath. If a piece does not have the words "ovenproof" proceed with caution. Although all pottery is kiln-fired, that does NOT mean that it can safely cope with the (much lower) temperatures in a domestic oven.

(The reason that non-ovenproof ware cracks in an oven is:

(i) expansion takes place too fast; and

(ii) there may be a residual water content that expands into steam.

It follows that almost all ceramic objects can be reheated to high temperatures, provided it is done slowly enough to avoid expansion-cracking).

People who are trained to excavate historic sites are known as Archaeologists. They are looking for any clues that will help them to know what was there, when it was built, who built it, why it was built and so on. They are not just looking for items such as coins and pottery, although if there are any then they are of great help in putting a date on when people lived there.

How do you melt paraffin?

The way I do it is by putting the paraffin in a small pot and then putting the small pot in a larger pot half full with water, bring the water to a boil, heat the small pot with the paraffin until melted. Paraffin is wax, pure and simple. So it is quite simple to just heat the product until it melts. Purchased from the shop, it usually comes in one pound blocks in the US. It is a petroleum product so it will burn and catch fire. To melt it properly, use a water boiler. If you do not have this item, simply put a large pan of water to heat and place a smaller pan inside with the paraffin inside. Simmer the water and the paraffin will melt inside the smaller pan. It is not a hugely quick process but it is safe and will not burn down the kitchen. Do not microwave this item as it will produce unexpected problems. Chopping the paraffin into smaller pieces will produce a quicker melt. Adding used crayons will give nice effects if you are making candles. A word of thriftiness...do not use your good pan for paraffin melting as it is impossible to remove all the residue from the pan. I would suggest that you make a trip to your thrift shop or salvage store and get a cheap pan to use strictly for paraffin. If you are mold making, have the mold handy to pour directly out of the pan. Use protection because unexpected splashes will leave burns as paraffin will "stick" to skin and produce nasty burns.

What are the stages a piece of clay goes through to make a finished piece of pottery?

1. Slip-watered down clay in a muddy form

2. Plastic-workable stage; molding stage; can recycle; can join to other pieces

3. Leather-hard-stiff and will hold its shape; join to other pieces; carve into; recycle

4. Greenware-bone dry; can be carved into; very fragile; can recycle

5. Bisqueware-fired once in kiln; can not be recycled; glazing stage

6. Earthenware-second fire-low fire; can not be recycled

7. Glazeware-second fire-high fire; can not be recycled; vitrified

What are some different types of clay?

Kaolin:

This is very pure clay and serves as a standard to compare other clays for glazes.

Ball Clay:

Similar to kaolin, but the particles were deposited in swampy areas where the organic acids and compounds released from decaying vegetation served to break down the clay particles into even finer sizes than those of sedimentary kaolins.

Stoneware:

These are, generally, plastic clays that fire in the range of cone 6 to 10.

Fireclays:

These are high-firing clays commonly used for insulating bricks, hard firebrick and kiln furniture. Some are plastic, some aren't.

Earthenware:

These are low-firing clays (cone 08 - 02).

Slip Clay :

These are clays that naturally contain enough flux that they function as a glaze without further additions.
