Are ceramic mugs safe?

Ceramic mugs are generally safe. Some glazes used in ceramics can leach metals into liquids used in them: responsible makers test the glazes used on items intended for food use before selling them. It is possible for porous ceramics to harbor bacteria, especially if the glaze is cracked or crazed, but there is little risk if the item is washed before use, and is not used for storage.

What material is Mexican pottery normally made from?

Here is a site that explains their technique quite nicely:

The ancient techniques employed to make ceramics are still used today - mostly in the rural parts of Mexico. It's curious how these groups were able to preserve their artistic techniques - coil building, open firing, natural pigments - and yet they lost their original language and their religion.

When the Spaniards arrived, the blending of societies allowed the indigenous people to learn new techniques, and the combination of styles gave life to some of the more famous ceramic styles of Mexican earthenware, such as the "majolica" or Talavera.

What does ceramic produce?

What mineral is in porcelain sinks?

Aluminous porcelain. Porcelain is a glass product with a crystalline internal structure. In the case of porcelain used in sinks and toilets, the crystalline inclusions are mostly aluminum oxide which makes the glass tough and difficult to break. It also makes the porcelain opaque. Aluminum oxide is also used in the formulation of the glass matrix as a stabilizer. In this form, the aluminum oxide does not affect the translucency of the glass, but, rather makes it stronger and reduces the solubility of the glass.

How do you fix broken pottery?

Weldbond has been recommended by many.

Mix it 5 parts of water per 1 part Weldbond and apply to each edge of broken ceramic to seal.

After that's dry, working with two pieces at a time, apply undiluted Weldbond to each edge and wait until slightly tacky. Press the pieces together and hold with masking tape until dry.

Weldbond dries clear and is nontoxic, so you should have a usable, attractive bowl when finished.

Another option is to take the bowl to a ceramics shop where they can repair and re-fire it, often make it look new again.

Why did they make the potters' wheel?

Before the potters wheel pots were made from slabs of clay that were placed together, or by making snakes of clay and coiling them together. It would be easy to allow a small hole to be in the clay and so make the pot useless using these methods.

The wheel allows a pot to be made from one piece of clay which would be more watertight. (A glaze is still required to make it fully watertight)

Also the speed of making pots on a wheel is much greater than doing it by hand and so mass production is much easier. P.S.: i mean something other than that :)

How do you remove rust stains from ceramic tile?

If you put a whole jar of Tang in a rusty dishwasher and run a full cycle the dishwasher comes out bright as new! Perhaps make a paste of Tang and water and scrub-brush it onto the rust stains.

Rust Stains are easy to STOP before they START. Homeowners, all over the Country, who pump their sprinkler water from a lake, pond or canal are faced with the chance of getting rust stains on their house, driveway, patio and plants. Iron particles in the water are heavy so they tend to settle closer to the bottom. If your water intake is close to the bottom of the lake, pond or canal, then you are sucking in a higher concentration of iron and you can expect to see rust on your house. The simple solution is to float your water intake closer to the surface. This is why you will see duck and geese decoys floating behind many houses in South Florida.

An illustration of this problem, and solution, can be seen at:

  • It can be painted on and scratched through to make a design (sgraffito).
  • Or it can be used to fill in marks that have been carved into the surface (inlaying)

How do you make a animal out of clay?

Objective:

To make an animal using "Pinch pot" method with minimal tools and equipment. Lakeside Pottery Ceramic School and Studio in Stamford, CT uses this project to provide instant gratification in the first class or two where it increases self confidence and interest to learn more about pottery.

What is needed:

1) Clay

2) Pin tool

3) Slip

Step by step:

1) Form two equal sized balls of clay, approximately 1/2 pound each.

2) Hold ball in left hand and push right thumb into the middle of the ball leaving about 1/4" - 1/2" thickness at the bottom.

3) Slowly and evenly pinch the clay, starting at the bottom rotating the ball, moving toward the top edge. Leave about 1/4" thickness at edge.

4) Once both pinch pots have been created, score with a pin tool both edges.

5) Apply slip heavily to one pot.

6) Join pots. They might not fit exactly, this is fine. Slide the back of the thumb from one pot over seam onto the other.

7) Once the seam is completely sealed, air is trapped like a balloon and the object can be altered to create desired shape by gently rolling and pressing.

8) To form a head, make another much smaller pinch pot and attach it to body form using the slip and score method described above (not shown).

9) Add legs and feet, always remembering to slip and score everything.

10) To form spines, roll small pieces of clay into approximately 1/2" long coils. Fold in half and press folded end onto clay body, smearing and smoothing as you go.

11) Cut a hole on the bottom to allow air to escape while drying and during firing. Also, create an air passage between the head and the body.

12) Dry very slowly by lightly covering the finished work.

13) High firing (cone 6 or higher) is recommended to insure the spines are not too fragile in the finished product.
