It will almost always crack or break into a million pieces if fired when wet because the water in the clay boils, turns to steam and can't escape fast enough so it blows out the walls of your figure. The moisture must be allowed to escape slowly (usually takes several days of room temperature drying) before heating in a kiln or oven.

How many coats of glaze do you need?

The answer to your question depends on what you want your final product to be.

If you intend on having a gold or silver glaze on your ceramics, you have to go through several steps. First, the ceramic piece has to reach the correct initial temperature to ensure the clay has set into the correct density to accept the first coating of glaze. After fired, you will then be able to paint on the next coat, whether it be another coat of glaze or your silver or gold glaze.

You can have several layers of glaze on an item, but there could be chemical interactions depending on colors and composition of your item.

What glass and clay have in common?

Glass is silica (sand) mixed with soda. The soda helps the silica to melt - it acts as a flux.

Clay often contains silica, and sometimes quite a high proportion of a clay is silica minerals. It also ususally contains alumina and a variety of other minerals. The particular combination of minerals is what gives different types of clay their indivdual properties.

In firing the clay doesn't melt like glass, but some of the compoentes of the clay will melt partially.

How much does a 6 x 6 ceramic tile weigh?

Not sure how exact you neeed to be, but the thickness & the density would be unknowns from your question & they will both impact the answer.

A 6X6 wall tile will be less than floor tile & thick tile likely more than thinner. But if you use 8-10 ounces per 6X6 floor tile you will be very close. Add thinset & grout & still more variables crop up.

That is if it is really ceramic, travertine, porcelain or Saltillo would all be different too.

Is hull brown drip pottery microwave safe?

I don't know, but you could give the pottery a microwave test. Put one cup of water in the pottery cup or bowl, put it in the microwave for one minute 15 seconds. take it out. Feel the water, if it is only lukewarm and the cup or bowl feels hot, it is NOT microwave safe ( the pottery is absorbing the microwaves instead of the water ). If the water feels hot, it is microwave safe.
