How do you replace the serpentine belt on a 1997 Chevy Cavalier?
>Hey Darlene==Use a wrench on the bolt through the idler pulley to raise up on the pulley and take the tension off of the belt. There should be a schematic for the routing of the belt on the fan shroud, If not, draw one before you remove the belt. Don't rely on memory. GoodluckJoe
Comments from KenJudy: Hi. I just had to replace the alternator on my daughter's 1997 2.2 liter Chevy Cavalier. "GoodluckJoe" gives good advice but here are some details that I figured out thay may help. For mine the idler pulley is the one depicted as an X below. Using a 15MM wrench on the bolt in the middle of the idler pulley clockwise loosens tension on the belt. The only way I could get the belt back on was to put it on the idler pulley last.

Very good drawing from KenJudy, I looked at mind and had a time till I got it right. Some car shops store will lend out tools if you can find one ask for a serpentine wrench. It's the greats little tool you need, basicly it's a flat bar with a socket on the end. You use the 15mm socket and just put it on the bolt in the middle of the idler pulley and then pull towards the front of the car. Slip the belt off the smooth pulley and release the pully slowly. Pull the belt out and get the new one in place, then pull the wrench towards you again. There is a spring inside the motor you can't see. You may have to just hook it on the power steering pulley abit and move the wrench to pull it again. Once it's on all the pulleys are lined up just release the pully slowly. Get all your stuff out of the way and get the car a quick turn over and check every pulley, if everything looks good start the car. Just let it run for abit, and there you go. I bought a serpentine wrench at a discount auto store for $12. I'll keep the old belt and the wrench in my trunk just in case.
Cheers

hello this is Mark the moast important part in changing the serpentine belt is the SERPENTINE WRENCH without it you wont be able to get the tension off belt because you think there is not enought room to get it off with a rachet or wrench
How do you remove the dash of a 1997 Chevy cavalier to remove stock stero?
i have a 2003 Cavy but i don't think they change to much. remove your red batter cable first you not only might zap yourself you gotta make sure you don't zap your car either. when i open my doors there are inserts on the drivers side they one has the fuse door. take those bolts out mine are 7mm i used a nut driver all most all of the dash is 7mm. take them out on both sides. also you gotta take off the defroster vent hat way you'll have more room to move without breaking stuff. next open your glove box there's one obvious bolt then another one deeper in a hole make sure you get them both. OK now under your steering heel cover there should be three bolts that hold it togeher take them out and take off the top it takes some wiggling but it'll make the dash easier. there are also two 7mm bolt down right above the storage try in the console there pretty far back three so make sure you get them. after everything's all loosened up mostly the main dash bezel is held by clips rather than pulling the hell out of it get a flat head screw driver cover it in sum kinda tape and slowly pry till they pop out you can feel them all around. once you've got it semi removed you gotta unplug the backing on the cigarette lighter its a semi-simple clip use a screw driver to help if u need it. also you gotta get the dimmer switch its best unclasped right behind the face of it to disconnect the whole thing and remove the bezel there are four 7mm bolts holing you stock radio in there take those out and you'll have access to all the wires which you can get an exact diagram on the web for that stuff. if you didn't already you should buy the adapter too. some people switch the radio with the heat control panel to give it a custom look. personally i wouldn't 'cus if you got a soda in there you can't piss with the radio to each his own i guess anyways that's how you tear it apart yous might be a little different i didn't know anything when i first dived in but not too had just be gently you don't want to have to buy new plastic you want to buy more CDs. o and if your planning on doing any dash painting now's the time for that too. the less times you have its gusts out the less chance of infection or in other words breaking stuff if u want to know how to do that just get 180 grit sand paper sand it smooth. go to advanced auto parts buy more cans then you think you need. tape stuff off and spray away or check youtube. if i didn't help any you can get a Haynes repair manual from advanced too good luck with your system and nice choice in a car, its not hard to do an amp and subs either if your into that.
If auto.
Dipstick should be at the rear passenger side of the engine If you can't find the stick it might be because on the 4 speed auto trans models there is none, check your manual. It may be a sealed unit.
