What causes a 1989 Chrysler New Yorker to suddenly lose Spark?

I changed coil, bad fuel and starter relay, distributor cap and rotor. Still no spark. I ran jumper from negative coil terminal to body and the car started up. I disconnected the jumper while car was still running and car stopped-spark emitted from jumper. This was a mistake. Car will not spark again. Yes-do not disconnect any electrical while car is running. I am back to square one, but I believe I narrowed my original problem down to a bad/open wire/connection within the ground to the coil. I will now follow the black/white negative wire for faulty/open connection or bad ground. Any suggestions?

Transmission on 92 Chrysler new yorker stuck in low gear?

I don't know if this will help, but it may. I was hours into a long trip when my 95 New Yorker suddenly downshifted on the highway. Lucky no one was behind me. I had no sooner pulled over to the shoulder than someone pulled over to assist. He was an Auto Zone employee and told me that my problem was likely a sensor. His recommendation was to disconnect the battery for a few minutes (2-5) and the computer would reset itself. I did that and I was on my way. No problems since, and it's been less than 2 weeks.

Before my return, I put it in the shop to have it checked out. The mechanic said that unless the "check engine" light came on, there would be no trouble code they could get off the computer. When that happened, the check engine light didn't come on, neither did the "overdrive" light. I have no idea what happened and my mechanic said he just drive it.

If you have a check engine light on, you might go to Auto Zone if you live near one. They'll hook your car up to the diagnostic computer for little or no charge so that you can see what trouble code is showing.

When the fuel pump relay goes bad does that slow the flow of fuel to the engine?

If the fuel pump relay goes bad your fuel pump will not get power and you will get no fuel. If your fuel pressure is showing too low your pump is either weak and needs to be replaced, your fuel lines are restricted somewhere ( or possibly leaking ) or your fuel filter needs to be replaced.

How do you change the alternator on a 1993 Chrysler new yorker?

I just completed this task over the weekend. Difficult would be a good term to use to describe this job. Remove the negative cable from your battery before beginning.

First, remove serpentine belt. There is an tensioner pulley lower left of the engine. Once the belt is off, remove the bracket bolt from the intake, remove the top bolt from the alternator. You may want to remove the power steering reservoir to give your hand more room. Then the lower bolt must be removed. This bolt took me four hours to get out. In my case, the bolt was about an inch longer than needed and would not pass the motor mount to release the alternator from the mounting bracket. (I recommend purchasing the correct length bolt before reinstalling the alternator) Removal of the bottom bolt would constitute a whole new question of its own. Once this aggravating bolt is removed, turn the back of the alternator toward you and remove the wiring harness.

Since there is limited room between the firewall, motor, and bracket you may have to turn the alternator several times to find the correct position to pull

it through the seemingly too small hole. I have to admit I cheated by putting

a tire tool in the hole on top of the bracket and bending it back enough for the

alternator to come through. This will save you many minutes and many cuss words.

Once removed from the car, I had the old alternator checked. It was bad.

The new alternator was $130. Since the job is so time consuming and difficult,

I would recommend having the new alternator tested before leaving the store.

Mine was made in Mexico ... so. Don't forget the new lower mounting bolt. make

sure it is just long enough to pass through both ears of the alternator and still get the nut on it.

Get the new alternator through the hole, wire it up. Put the lower bracket bolt in. Then straighten the bracket and install the two top bracket bolts. Use a 15mm wrench to move the tensioner enough to get your serpentine belt back on the pulleys. Negative cable back on and crank. Check voltage. 13.5 +/- volts

This little project was quite challenging for a 60 year old mechanic.

Late Sleeper
