Why is a computer port needed?

Kind of a vague question, but computer ports are needed so different devices (such as a mouse or keyboard) can communicate with your computer, and allow you to use it.

I have an Acer Aspire 5534 that shows a blank screen the fan runs for about a second then stops all I see is the blue power light and I can hear the HDD Is it worth fixing?

Hello!

I'm never one for pitching a laptop until all reasonable efforts are made to locate the issue.

So, I researched your issue and it seems that you may need an update to the BIOS ("basic input/output system" which is the hardware and internal software that is responsible for booting the system). OR you may have a bad 'stick' of RAM.

First try this:

When the computer is totally off, press the power switch and hold it down for 4 seconds and then let go.

If the laptop powers up and windows starts to load normally you may need an update to your bios/firmware.

If your computer does start normally, you can check the version of your BIOS by using the following steps:

To find your current BIOS version in Windows, please follow the steps below:

  1. If you are running Windows 7 or Windows Vista:
    • From the Start menu, type msinfo32 in the search bar and hit the Enter key.
If you are running Windows XP:
    • From the Start menu, click Run and type msinfo32 in the Run box and hit the Enterkey.
  2. In the System Information window, click System Summary and locate your current BIOS Version/Date to the right.

At the time of this article, the current BIOS version for your computer is 1.6. You can find the updated BIOS 'software' on the Acer Support Site -Downloads & Support Documents - Aspire / Aspire 5534

The cause of your problem may also be that the BIOS battery needs replacing. It's sorta like a battery that goes into a watch or remote key fob for your car. Check the ACER site for the location and type of batter required for your system. (The Acer support site has an article on this topic: How do I maintain and store my notebook battery? Document ID: 2384)

Now, if the computer still doesn't come on after the 4 power button test, you might have an issue with the memory which is installed on the machine. Acer does not support users replacing memory, their website says to contact them directly if you suspect a memory issue.

Hope this helps and Good Luck!!!

What exact type of motherboard does the Compaq Presario 5240 and what operating systems does it support?

You should be able in theory able to install any 32 bit operating system. Whether or not it runs smoothly and fast is the question. OSs like linux (many different versions like Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Yellow Dog etc) tend to not use as much hardware resources while 'doing nothing' than windows. I do not know what motherboard it uses but it sounds pretty old and would make sence to buy a newer computer,

Just reimaged your machine and you cannot find the video controller driver how do you tell what kind of card you have?

The easiest solution is this: Open up your computer chassis and LOOK. The more advanced operating systems will usually check for updated drivers automatically, so this isn't a issue. Some video "cards" are actually video chipsets integrated into a motherboard...and you can find the motherboard specifications online if you know the model numbers (also obtained by looking)

What is the difference between cache vs cold cache vs hot cache vs warm cache vs cache hit vs cache miss?

Firstly, it sounds like you are asking for general definitions, rather than differential definitions, which is problematic when the definitions are differential and context specific.

Cache miss:

not in cache, must be loaded from the original source

Cache hit:

was loaded from cache (no implication of what "type" of cache was hit).

cold cache:

The slowest cache hit possible. The actual loading mechanism depends on the type of cache (CPU cache could refer to an L2 (or L3) hit, disk cache could refer to a RAM hit on the drive, web cache could refer to a drive cache hit)

hot cache:

The fastest cache hit possible. Depends on mechanism described (CPU could be L1 cache, disk could be OS cache hit, web cache could be RAM hit in cache device)

Warm cache:

Anything between, like L2 when L1 is hot and L3 is cold. It is a less precise term and often used to imply "hot" when the performance is closer to "cold."

How do you wipe your hard drive without a CD?

The best way to format your hard drive without a Windows disc is to obtain a copy of Linux (any distribution will do) and run the installer, making sure that you select options to use the whole hard drive. You will then have a hard drive with Linux on it which you can either keep on your computer, or install another OS on top. An alternative method is to use Darik's Boot and Nuke, which will destroy the data on most hard drives. You can get it from dban.sourceforge.net.

What is one way to access files on a computer?

Go to the local disk (in the local disk) then Documents and Settings. It will have all the user's folders.

What are the letters associated with these drives?

In the 'old days', micro-computers didn't have drives. They used tape storage, etc. When 'floppy' drives began to be used (late 70's) they needed to be assigned some value so you could say which one to read from or write to. Someone (I'm not sure who) decided on using the letters 'A' through 'Z' for them. Most computers would only have had one or two floppy drives, so they typically were assigned to 'A' and 'B'. When 'hard' drives began to appear they also needed to be assigned a value, and because 'A' and 'B' were likely to already be used the hard drive was assigned to 'C'. Later additional hard drives may have been installed and they would be assigned 'D', 'E', etc. So you will probably notice that if your computer has a floppy drive it will be designated as 'A', and your hard drive will be designated as 'C'. The usage of letters is Windows way of telling the different drives apart. A:\ is usually designated for a 3.5" floppy disk, B:\ is usually designated for a 5.25" floppy disk, C:\ is generally assigned to the hard drive and is what Windows is installed on. D:\ is generally assigned to a CD-ROM. Depending on your own computer, this may or may not hold true (e.g. if you have 2 hard drives, one may be assigned D:\ and your CD-ROM drive E:\).
