When a serial port is used by an external modem the serial port is called the?
In the past external modems connected to the COM (or serial) port.
However, most modern external hardware is USB these days, modems are no exception.
How do you add new hardware to a computer?
Just follow the directions that come with the hardware. Every piece of hardware I have added in the last 20 years had instructions on how to install the hardware. Be sure to read them COMPLETELy before starting to install anything.
This ASSUMES the person has the documentation. If you want a more specific answer, then the question needs to be more specific as to which hardware that one is installing.
Yes. There are 1000 KB in 1 MB, so 16 MB is 16 000 KB.
Note! This is only approx calculations. It's actually 1024 KB in 1 MB, but that's not necessary for the calculations in this case.
Mainframe is used in business where the data to be processed is too huge and has to be processed too many times and may require too much CPU cycles where the else of the computers may flunk.
Mainframes are very similar too supercomputers ahich can process huge number of transactions in small amout of time . but the only diff between supercomputer and mainframes is supercomputers are used to calculate and process complex algorithms say which has so many integration and diffretiation and lotssa calculus steps where as mainframes are used to handle simple business related calculations like addition and subtraction kinda things .

First understand that any company that has a mainframe is pretty big--an insurance company, a carmaker, someone like that. They will use it for several things:
It's got the company's databases on it. One of the databases might be a list of customers: it will list the customers and usually all the things they've ordered over a certain time period. You can do this with a PC, but mainframe databases can get much larger and they've got more features.
It's set up to share resources. All the company's printers will be hooked to it. When you send a print job to it, you can tell it to print only to one printer, or to any printer that's available and capable of taking the job.
These days corporate e-mail will go into the mainframe.
And sometimes you run programs on mainframes, but that was mostly done back before PCs got so prevalent. When all you had was a "dumb terminal" like an IBM 3278, the mainframe had to store plus process your data; today a lot of processing is done out on the PC and completed data is sent back to the big iron.
-----------------------------------------------------
Simpler, a mainframe is only a way to designate the main node withing an array of computers linked by networking. In other words, he the big kahuna!, but it doesint mean he's the most powerful!.
Mainframe = Node 1 = Computer #1 = Big kahuna
Jumper!
Who are three manufacturers of motherboard chipsets?
As far as I know, SiS, ViA and Intel all supply chipsets to the motherboard manufacturers, but they may not be the only ones.
What are Limitations of cache Memory?
size. cache memory is situated on the CPU, and stores recently used data, in case the CPU needs again soon. cache memory is many, many times faster than RAM, just RAM is much faster than the HD.
What tool can you use to create a console containing device manager?
Windows comes with many applications for administering and managing the system. In older versions, these programs had to be used separately. In Windows XP, there is an interface that can be customized to contain in one package all the system tools that a particular user employs on a frequent basis. For networks or multi-user systems there are also a variety of security settings that can be made within the interface. Microsoft calls this interface a "management console" and generally refers to it as MMC. A computer user can choose which of the many available tools to include. The individual tools are referred to as "snap-ins". A console has a hierarchical structure with folders and in fact resembles a Windows Explorer tree.
Many of the system tools that come with Windows XP are already in a console form. They can be used alone or as snap-ins to a console that contains a collection of applications. The sidebar on the right lists the preconfigured consoles most commonly used. These are found in the folder \Windows\System32\. Depending on your setup, there may be some in other locations as well. (Some of these come only with the XP Professional version.) Note that the consoles have the extension msc (not to be confused with MMC). Most of these consoles can be opened by entering their names (including the extension) in the Start-Run line. Some, but not all, are also accessible from Control Panel. Depending on how your computer is set up, some may also be listed in Start-All Programs-Administrative Tools. As is common in Windows there are also several other ways to open some of the tools. However, using the Run line is probably the easiest way. (A few consoles intended mainly for systems administrators may be in folders not included in the standard path environment and will need the Run line browse function)
Some of the consoles that have specialized purposes for use by systems administrators may not normally be of interest to the average PC user.
devmgmt.msc- the Device Manager
eventvwr.msc- Event Viewer for managing system logs
http://vlaurie.com/computers2/Articles/mmc.htm Simply use mmc.exe and add snap ins into the console.
Type MMC into the run box and add these as snap-ins into the console.

Explain the benefits of using a mouse over a keyboard?
the advantage and use of computer mouse is to click icons. by using mouse is faster in terms of pointing in to an object on your computer. unlike by using keyboard, you need some keyboard shortcuts in order to execute or click an object.
What are power connectors use to provide power to CD drive?
Most common is a 4 PIN connector that comes conntected to the power supply or jumped from another 4 PIN connector. The pins will be in a streaght line. There are now also SATA power connectors that once side "flat and long" connects the the CD drive and the other "fat and short" 4 PIN female end to connect to a 4 pin male end
How do you refill Epson Ink Cartridges?
you need a chip resetter to rifill these cartriges
The ink cartridges used in Epson's Stylus line of printers are very similar to the ones used in its other printers. A handful of cartridges--like the S020034, S020047 or S020049--may require a slightly different refilling technique, but they all basically entail opening a fill hole in the top to run down into the ink chamber within. Once the chamber is accessible, you can use a basic refill kit with a syringe bottle to refill the chamber, as with most printer-ink cartridges.
1.Hold the cartridge upside down so the outlet holes to the printer paper are on top. Cover each hole with a piece of tape, then turn the cartridge right-side up.
2.Make a hole in the top of the cartridge above each ink chamber. For most cartridges, simply poke a hole through the label with a toothpick. With cartridges like the Epson Stylus 34 (the casing of which is black), pull back the label to reveal the filling holes and puncture the seal of each home. For the 47 or 49 color cartridge, drill a 1/8-inch hole in the shell between the label and front edge.
3.Determine which color of ink is in which chamber (if you're refilling a color cartridge). The toothpick used to puncture the hole should draw out some ink to show you. If you have a cartridge in which you punctured the label directly, the order of the color chambers is usually cyan, magenta and yellow. If you created the hole in another way (like with the 34, 47 or 49 cartridges), the order is usually magenta, cyan and yellow.
4.Fill the syringe bottle with 5ml of ink. Insert the needle in the filling hole and inject the ink. There may be a sponge inside the chamber, so make sure the needle goes all the way through to the bottom. The 34 cartridge takes up to 12ml of ink.
5.Tape over the fill holes you created. If you drilled the holes, plastic plugs (like the ones included in a refill kit) can work as well. Leave the tape on the outlet holes as you replace the cartridge in the Epson Stylus printer.
6.Run a cleaning or priming cycle on the printer with the cartridge installed. One to three cycles should be enough. You may also need to let the cartridge stand in the printer overnight, or for up to 24 hours.

How many times faster is a hi-speed usb port than an original usb port running at 12 mbps?
A Hi-Speed USB port is 40 times faster than Original USB port running at 12 Mbps because 12 divided by 8 equals 1.5 which is how many Megabytes not Megabits that can be transferred with USB 1.1 since there are 8 bits in one byte.
What are compatible video cards for dell 8500?
Any AGP graphics card (such as an NVIDIA GeForce 7600GS or an ATI Radeon HD 4760) will work. Depending on the power requirements of the card, you may need to upgrade your power supply.
What do you do if you suspect the network port is not functioning?
If you find that you are having network troubles the first thing to do is check to see if the cable is plugged in correctly. If it is, try pinging your loopback address. If that doesn't work that means that there is a problem with your NIC and it should be replaced.
How many bits can a serial port send and receive at a time using how many wires?
In a serial connection, at any given time in one direction r the other, data is transferred across only one wire, one bit at a time. The usual example of a serial connection, DB-9, uses two wires, but still keeps to this rule.
No, a bar code scanner is not a storage device. The scanner is a peripheral device used to read the bar code on a product, and an associated computer can use that information to identify that product and provide pricing and other information about it. That identifying information and other data is held on a storage device associated with the computer.
How does the number of cores make the processor better?
Extra processor cores will only enhance system performance on heavy applications that support multiple core use. Most professional applications support this such as Adobe Photoshop support this. Extra cores will also enhance multitasking. To make a lighter system (smaller applications such as web browsing) run faster you need a higher clock speed. This is measured in Ghz.
Clients have to accept 4.75 to 5.25V and must be able to send configuration data as low as 4.4V. Hubs are allowed to drop as much as 0.35V.
By itself, a USB plug does not have to supply more than 100mA; however up to 500mA can be negotiated between device and host. Some USB hosts simply offer up 500mA from the get-go.
USB power supplies short the two data lines (white and green) which allows the device to probe for the fact that they're power supplies (i.e. that they provide the full 500mA without negotiation and that they won't respond to data).
How can your monitor speaker work?
The same way any set of speakers works - by sending an analog audio signal to an amplifier connected to the speakers. Whether the speakers are integrated into the monitor or stand-alone units, the wire from the speakers/monitor must be connected to the audio output of the computer. This wire terminates in a 3 conductor mini-phone plug. The jacket of this plug and the proper jack on the rear of the computer are usually light green in color. Under the jack, the mounting panel will have 'SPKR' etched into the metal/
What should you do after powering off the computer?
You should let it run disk utilities when it comes on. If you cannot get into it, you might need to run a repair install of Windows.
Where do you put the micro sd adapter on your computer?
If you are refering to SD Card adapter, there are the following methods.
If the adapter uses USB, then attach it to a USB port. (common)
If the adapter converts to firewire, plug it into a firewire port. (uncommon)
If it adapts mini/micro SD to SD, then slot it into a SD Card Slot.
How do you repair BSOD - Blue Screen of Death - on your computer?
Can depend on what caused it. It means the machine can't decide what to do next so it goes belly up (BSOD).
If you installed some new hardware the problem might be that....called a driver problem quite often. Need to uninstall it and read instructions or call manufacture.
Sometimes a simple restart will clear things up.
If you didn't installed anything, hardware of software and the machine is a few years old some component might have gone bad and the computer doesn't know what to do next. The next step is to open it up and start disconnecting things and restarting to find out what's causing the problem. This of course requires some 'puter knowledge, best left to the pros.
