However, there is strong evidence to suggest that the first computer that was a model for the laptop was the Grid Compass, developed in 1979 in the UK by William Moggridge for Grid Systems Corporation. • An abacus is a counting device that uses beads on a table or string that represent numbers. The device is divided into columns, each column representing a multiple of 10 (x10, x100, x1000 etc.) and each column has 10 beads in it. This enables numbers to be formed by rearranging the beads, this means that simple and complex arithmetic can be performed on the abacus.

An information system does not only refer to the way in which business data is stored by a company. It also refers to the way in which the business interacts with clients or associates, processes orders, and advertises.

Basically, a manual information system is one that does not rely on any computerized systems and a computer-based information system does. A manual-based system will see information recorded and kept in different ways such as in files in paper form. Whereas a computer based information system will see data stored on various computer programs including on databases, Word documents, Excel etc.

Both types of information system are designed to help a business carry out its day-to-day operations. Computer-based systems are generally considered to be more popular as more businesses are choosing to keep up with the developments in information technology. There are still those who continue to use manual systems though, perhaps as a matter of financial constraints or it may simply be more suitable for their type of business.

A manual-based information system is generally considered to be cheaper than a computer-based system, however it may contribute to lower levels of staff productivity. In addition, having data stores manually in boxes or files is not very environmentally-friendly and this could leave company documentation at risk if a fire broke out for example as there would be no back up.

A computer-based information system is more cost effective and efficient than a manual system. It speeds up operations and can back up important information at the touch of a button. It is however very expensive to set up and may need to be maintained by IT technical support advisors on a regular basis.

Laptops - Typically 13 inch to 15 inch screens. Screen is built in and is able to be folded.

Netbook/Ultrabook - Typically 7 inch to 10 inch screens. Screen is built in and is able to be folded.

All-in-one - It appears to be just a screen, but is similar to a Laptop in terms of performance but is not able to be folded and is less portable.

Desktop - This is a 'box' that houses all the parts for a computer, it is able to be the most powerful of all the above systems and is the most customisable.

Work Station - This is much like a Desktop (as it looks the same) but it uses virtual software, so you will be connected to a server (look bellow this) which has all the software the workstation is using and all the data.

Server - this is often where all data from a company is stored, they handle a lot of possess from externally from the company or internally. They are often stacked on top of each other in what is called a server tower (the most recognisable thing about a server as you see them in films a lot). But servers can be 'boxes' like desktop, but will be much larger. Many server motherboards (or mainboards) have room for 2 CPUs (where as all other systems have 1 CPU) and have room for 6 slots of RAM (where as laptops often have room for 2, and desktops have room for 4 sticks of RAM).
